5K Resolution (5120x2880) via NVIDIA Drivers on Dell UltraSharp 27" Monitor

The state of HDMI 2.0 in macOS is somewhere between "troublesome" and "not existent", so a HDMI 2.0 to DP 1.2 adapter wouldn't help a lot.

It doesn't make much sense adapting in that direction anyway, as DisplayPort is the superior signal type.

Well HDMI 2.0 exists on my Titan X card and on bugsyraz's 970. An HDMI 2.0 to DP 1.2 adapter would help with 5K if the macOS driver was fixed for people that don't have two DisplayPorts. It would probably help in Windows with the existing Windows drivers.

DisplayPort and HDMI are both digital signals so there isn't any difference in quality. DisplayPort has higher bandwidth (and some other features), but that's not useful if your monitor doesn't need it.

An HDMI 2.0 to DP 1.2 adapter would be useful for game console owners that want to connect their console to a DisplayPort display instead of a TV.
 
After a couple of months of experience with a Dell UP2715K I came to the conclusion that I would NOT recommend this monitor for a hackintosh setup.
Apart from the issues with black or split screen at startup, which can be solved with a power cycle, or the sleep issues some user are experiencing with the 5k (I'm one of them), in my opinion the real deal breaker is the cursor issue randomly affecting Sierra Nvidia drivers that doesn't seem to have a reliable solution/workaround.
Overall 4k mode gives me a better experience. Not only all the issues are gone, I also think OSX interface is more readable and usable at this resolution (and of course Windows 10 looks much better in Parallels). Frankly, I can't think too many scenarios in which 5k would be better than 4k on a 27" monitor.
Of course, buying a 5k monitor to drive 4K resolution is less than ideal...

I kinda came to the same conclusion lately and I'm looking into selling this monitor and buying 2 4k monitors instead.
DSR is not properly supported yet and it probably won't be in the future.

That means, when you use a 4K-monitor in HiDPI mode -> 1920x1080 ?
Maybe I'll also buy a 4K monitor for compatibility and sell the 5k, but I got really used to the nice Retina-setting at 2560x1440
 
I just got a 980ti and I'm trying to get 5k.

I got 5K by using nv_spanmodepolicy=1 and nvda_drv=1 BUT one monitor turns off when I get 5k.

I have 3 monitors and I only get signal on the 5K and on another 1080p monitor. Any ideas?

Exactly, it's 1920x1080 HiDPI instead of 2560X1440 HiDPI.
5K was nice but cursor problems are too annoying for everyday work. I also had the feeling that the problem is worse when using Parallels.

Alright, well that's a bummer. Regarding the cursor problem, I'll stick with 10.11 for a while - everything's working except the monitor power cycle on every boot, but I can live with it.
 
What about multiple monitors? Does anyone have any idea about this? Driving the monitor at 4k seems much more stable and without any glitches. Is 5k on hackintosh hopeless?

You could create a retina setting of 2560x1440 on a 4K display. It looks ok. Just use SwitchRes X to create a scaled resolution of twice the horizontal and vertical resolution: 5120x2880. This works on an Nvidia card. I'm not sure about Intel graphics though. That may be limited to a width of 4096...
