Hey there

I added a second 4k screen to my Hackintosh. Two identical screens (ASUS PB287Q), one GPU (EVGA GTX950 02G-P4-2951-KR), both screens connected via high quality 4k capable DP cables. Both displays run on DP 1.2.

The problem:
Every now and then (I'd say about every minute or so), one of the screens goes dark for a second or two. In some rare cases I get weird distortion artefacts instead of the blackout and even more rarely I get both (1 second distorted artefacts, two seconds black and then back to normal) So far, I could not figure out why this happens. The two displays run without issues otherwise. I tried to switch cables and tested all three DP connectors on the GPU (one of them seems to not work at all).

Question 1:
Does anyone else had similar problems and know how to fix them?

Question 2:
Would I be fine adding a second, identical GPU to my machine, so each display would then be powered by its dedicated GPU? I am considering this, because I noticed that the graphic performance is not as snappy as it was with only one 4k display.

Many thanks for your help in advance!

To eliminate the GTX960 causing the problem with black outs when connected to two 4k monitors, you could use the built in thunderbolt connections, cheaper to buy a cable to test than another GPU. For information how to enable thunderbolt on the same motherboard take a look at tonymacx86's build thread here https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...3-test-build-ga-z170x-ud5-th-i5-6600k.199242/
Worth a try before purchasing another GPU. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the tip @wildwillow. I'm not sure, if I can follow you 100%, though. Why would the Thunderbolt connections potentially solve the black outs? I understand you correctly, that you suggest to connect the two displays via the mainboard's Thunderbolt 3 ports, right? Is there such a thing as a TB3 to DP cable? Because afaik the displays only support 4k with 60Hz via DP.

Apologies if I wasn't clear, my suggestion was to leave one monitor connected to your 960 and instead of purchasing another 960 as you mentioned in post #1 use your HD530/thunderbolt port avilable from your Intel GPU/HD530 and connect your 2nd 4k monitor to the thunderbolt port which supports 4k @60Hz. This way it could eliminate purchasing another 960 to test 2 4K monitors. If either of the monitors black out then it may be a monitor issue rather than your hardware/system set up issue.

How is your dual monitor research?
