Enabling AMD RX 4XX cards in Sierra.

I got tired of all the NVIDIA bs and got an ASUS Strix RX460 4G (with 6-pin).
Flashed the bios using Windows to unlock the cores. Configured my Hackintosh and works like a charm.

If only I could get HDMI audio working, I would be happy.

As of 12/3/16 Polaris 10 support is in Sierra Beta 4 version, and now there is Vega 10 (the new unreleased AMD card) in the AMD9500Controllerkext.

Am I understanding this correctly, as in rx480 cards will work OOB with 10.12.3?

Very interested in this because I'm building a Hackintosh on a x99 motherboard and I wanted to use this card.

You will need a helper graphics card and one 16 lane pci slot and one 4 lane pci slot. If you can configure this in bios you can make it work. They're not OOb completely, you need to make a few adjustments but most are able to get them working and use them for graphics work. They along with the newer AMD cards need bios settings for igpu or IGFX as primary display, or integrated graphics mode. If you don't have graphics on you CPU you can use a lesser " native supported (OOB)" card as integrated graphics and it works. One user in the testing thread with an X99 system has a 1070 in slot one 16 lanes, and an RX 480 in the #3 slot with 4 lanes for the RX card. In Windows he has the 1070 and then when he boots into Sierra the 1070 lists as display 5mb, but the RX gets support and functions well.

I've tested this using my Z170 in dedicated graphics mode and it works, it's not as good as with igpu (CPU) and RX card it loses about 10% performance. However, z170 systems only have 16 lanes total so an X99 with more lanes available (CPU) dependent should work a lot better.

Need to point out that if anyone else is also experiencing similar problems. The current driver tends to crash game/whole system for me pretty often while watching html5 h264 content on youtube with hardware acceleration on. With browser eg firefox. And playing metal/opengl game at the same time.

So it would be safe to disable all hardware acceleration on card. In firefox about:config and media.hardware-video-decoding.enabled to false

And there was no difference between beta and stable.

Hi there, performed a new Sierra install and my Gigabyte AMD RX 460 just seems to work - or so I thought. Graphics seems fine with supported status and Metal, audio vis Display Port is however not working and I've just noticed Airplay Mirroring isn't there at all.

I really need audio, but would I be messing with what works to try and get something else working? I have to be honest and tell you I don't really understand why the card works now with no messing, has Sierra update done this?

Hmm, I have a 4GB copy this card and there is some good news and bad news. So far (bad news), audio over DP and HDMI is not yet working very well. You might be better off in the short term using the AppleHDA audio script that gives you motherboard audio -- you do get optical audio which might do for what you are trying to accomplish.

But, (good news) I have no problems with AirPlay mirroring; it works in iTunes and Kodi and every audio app I have that supports it to begin with. It could be you need the run the AppleHDA audio script to begin with... ??? Or your settings need to be checked in your router?

Best wishes.

Hey there jerryy2345 many thanks for your reply, I really appreciate your comments but you have misunderstood my questions:

Airplay Mirroring is actually "Screen" mirroring (to my Apple TV's which is not working) whereas you have confused this with Just AIRPLAY - which is audio only and to which I have working. Yes I do have audio out from my MB - but I don't need it.

I NEED audio out of my Display Port, let me explain, and forgive me if your from the US and don't know what Sky Q is (cable, HBO etc) !

My brief was that I needed a 4K monitor with 1 x input for an apple TV (HDMI) and 1 x input for my Sky Q Box (HDMI) and another input somehow from my Hackintosh - to make things harder the monitor also needed to be white!!

After months of scouring the internet with no luck I went to the US on vacation, strolled into a FRYs electronics and found a WHITE LG 4K monitor with 2 x HDMIs and 1 x DISPLAY port - bingo. Even better it had an audio out jack that meant the monitor acts as a music source selector or "mixer" for the audio - whatever's on the screen comes out the audio jack on my monitor and into my speaker system. On windows this all works great as there's of course an RX 460 driver.

But in MacOS with no audio being fed into the DP my whole plan comes crashing down around me as the monitor is key to my audio distribution. My audio has only 1 x wired input or Bluetooth (tried latter its laggy).

The fact that the monitor was to big to buy and take home on the plane, and that they don't sell them in the UK is another story that's best left for another time - but after all this careful planning see why I must have audio thru my DP?

I am well aware of the difference, your first posting was only concerned with audio... your second posting is very different and a certainly more illuminating as to what you are trying to achieve :) but as I mentioned the AMD RX 460 audio over DP and HDMI is not working very well yet. And unfortunately, the same is true for the AMD RX 470 and AMD RX 480 cards. The situation is getting better as both the Clover folks and (hopefully) the Apple folks make improvements.

In the mean time this script is one of the better approaches to getting the basics in place for that coming day when things will be better.

p.s. Many of us here in the US have indeed heard of Sky Q Box, the BBC and all sorts of things but I must ask in reading ..."forgive me if your from the US"... what item of mine is from the US?

Hi again and thanks for the second reply

But my first post wasnt only concerned with audio as I said "I've just noticed Airplay Mirroring isn't there at all." meaning no mirroring to Apple TV and all my Airplay only devices in my house are there in iTunes etc.

And by my "forgive me if you are in the US" statement I simply meant about the Sky Q box, incase you wondered what the hell I was talking about, but you are obviously better informed that most; if I were to ask my friends in LA what a Sky Q box was I can tell you now they wouldn't have a clue.

I should also of said US or other country outside of the UK as you gave me no indication where you were from it was purely guess work.

There was definately no anti-US thing going on there either as my grandfather was from CA. which makes me of course 25% american so sorry if you took offence which was unintentional.

This is no sound on my DP is indeed an issue, as by now you have realised that it took a lot of planning to get this far.
