Yes, I like the size of mATX and I really don't want anything physically larger. The Strix motherboard pretty much eliminates whatever compromises existed with the Maximus VIII Gene.

10GbE is a nice luxury to have. It really improves performance to my NAS immensely. I recently picked up another card for my HP Elite 8300 for $32, so it's no longer prohibitively expensive if you are willing to buy used from Ebay.
 
I don't know what the difference is. I just followed the directions and did it the "proper" way. I don't understand why those people deviated from the instructions. If they are going to do that, they shouldn't bother mapping out the ports at all and just continue using the 15 port limit patch.

The IORegistryExplorer shows all is good. One thing just pops up in my mind. In the USB-SSDT I mapped out all the ports as "0"(USB2) and "3"(USB3). Even the internal USB2 port where I plugged in the Broadcom WIFI/BT card is mapped as "0". In the tonymac El Captain guide Part 7, there is something mentioned to add the "255"(internal BT etc. ). Do I need to change it as well?

I only used "0" if the port was a USB 2 only port. Ports that are USB2 and USB3, I used "3". For internal USB headers, I used "255".

ALL "internal" motherboard USB connectors are "255"? Regardless if they are USB 2 or USB 3?

In my case, one "internal" USB 3 port is routed to the frontpanel and gives me two front USB3 ports. Still "255"?

On the other hand, one "internal" USB 2 port is routed to the Broadcom Wifi/BT card. Still "255", too?

Again, thx a lot for your help.
 
I've been reading some reviews of the ROG Strix Z270G Gaming. One said that, while the ROG Strix Z270G Gaming is a VG mATX, it's not a GENE, and the reviewer expected a Z270 GENE to be announced soon. So, I'll think I'll wait a couple of weeks to see if the Z270 GENE does hit the marketplace.

However, all this good information on the Z270s aside, these motherboards are, right now, only for early adopters as audio chipset is not yet supported in hackintosh kext land. (The Sabrent USB sound adapter will probably work until kext land is updated.) Additionally, if you have a Skylake system, the Kaby Lake may not give you performance increase that's worth the bang for money unless you want the motherboards' newer USB and memory capabilities. As, for the new lighting capabilities...Bah!
 
Thanks for the info! I naturally assumed that was the Gene successor based on the Z270G designation... Yes, I'm definitely in a wait and see mode since Apple themselves are long overdue for updates to their desktop models.

My primary attraction to the Z270 models is the addition of a second M.2 SSD port. I'd like to use it for Windows. I'd like to use an AHCI M.2 since I use run Windows in Vmware Fusion most of the time and I'd like macOS to be able to see it without the NVMe work-arounds. The only thing that forces a bit of urgency is the fact that AHCI M.2 SSDs become increasingly difficult to find with each passing day...

No, for the internal USB3 headers, I use "3". On the Gene, there are two sets of internal USB2 headers (for a total of four USB2 ports) and I only have one active for Bluetooth. That's the one that I assigned "255" to.

Thx for the clarification. I made the "255" change, but I see no difference in IOregistryexplorer.
Maybe it's an "under the hood" thing. ;-)

It worked. Thank you so much. And guess what..... I now have SLEEP. Don´t ask my why, it just worked.
And now comes the "but":
Looking at iStats, my CPU fan still stands on zero rpm. On the other hand, the two GPU fans are giving results. Installing of the HWSensors binaries (newest version) doesn´t change anything. When I open my case, I can clearly see all fans are running.
Is it a BIOS thing? In BIOS, I put my case fans to PWM.
Or is this behavior a result of my SMBIOS Mac 3.1? Because of my skylake architecture, should I switch to iMac 14.2? And if I switch, what about my serial number? Can I keep it?

I have never had control of the CPU or case fans in macOS, nor have I ever gotten any RPM readings. This is true of all the system definitions I've tried (MacPro3,1, iMac14,2, and iMac171,1).

All of my fans are controlled by bios and they automatically ramp up and down based on CPU temps. They were all set by the Asus AI Suite in Windows.

I have never tried to retain serial numbers when changing system definitions and have no idea whether it works or not.
