M.2 compatibility with x58

For years I have been dealing with poor hard-drive performance on my Gax58ud3r. I only get around 200 mbps write and 300 read. I have been reading up on the Samsung m.2 drives and pcie adapters. So far it only looks like they make a pcie 3 adapter and my mobo is pcie 2. Are those adapters backwards compatible? Is there any chance of getting one to work? Right now in running osx 10.11.6 on my Sata 3 ssd and I'd like better performance for audio and video editing. It wouldn't cost much to upgrade and if I can get around 500 mbps or so read and write I'd be much happier! Trying to get as much out of my computer before I can afford to build a new one.

I ended up getting a Visiontek PCIe SSD, and it's faster than my SATA drives. But I can't boot from it because I get stuck on verifying dmi pool data.

It might be worth getting a standard PCIe NVMe drive.

There are plenty out there even though M.2 is the standard. Check eBay or Amazon.

I didn't use an adapter. It's a pcie ssd. I ended up getting a samsung m.2

Most older motherboards don’t support NVME drives. Z97 has 10 gb/sec the z170 went to 32 gb/sec. and newer boards are good.
The sandy bridge, ivy bridge boards may not have NVME support in the bios, thus you will get errors. So even if you use a M.2 drive it may not perform better than a Sata 3 drive. Update your bios and see if it has support before you buy a m.2 drive and adapter.

I just realized this thread was from my older Hackintosh lol I built a new one that supports m.2.
I went from an x58 i7 980 to a Gaming 7 with an i7 8700k
