The Mac Pro 3,1 System Definition won't work on Sierra. Use iMac14,2. Apple dropped support of the 2008 Mac Pro (3,1) for Sierra as well as most iMacs and MacBooks before 2010.

Thanks Stork ...will give it a try...

For those who have successfully installed El Capitan and/or Sierra on the TS140, could I get some help with USB settings?

I initially installed Yosemite using @P1LGRIM 's excellent guide and had most everything working using Clover, even audio using VoodooHDA, USB3, and Intel HD P4600 that comes with my processor chip.

However, after the El Capitan upgrade, things got wonkier. Random USB3 things don't work (like external HDDs) that used to work in Yosemite. I've done a lot of googling, but most of what comes up for USB seems to be targeted to laptops with DSDT patching. But I'm not seeing much in the way of TS140 information. Am I totally off base and don't need to do DSDT to get these ports working? Is it some Kext that I'm missing?

Clover latest version
El Capitan installed from App Store

Thanks a lot to OP for inspiring my courage to work on my TS140.
I installed Sierra directly on my TS140 with Xeon E3-1225v3. Everything works: UEFI boot, Intel P4600 graphics and ALC662 audio.

Good to see that it worked out ok for you too

Towards the start of this thread there was some discussion regarding the commonality of the motherboard for the TS140 and other Lenovo computers, also the BIOS particularly with regard to the sleep function.

As an experiment I downloaded the BIOS for the Lenovo p300 ThinkStation and can confirm that you can indeed install it to the TS140 ThinkStation but sadly as expected it will not cure the insomnia.
There does not appear to be any advantage to using the p300 BIOS other than that the ThinkStation BIOS seems to be updated more often than that of the ThinkServer.

Recently I had the opportunity to purchase a p300 ThinkStation at a knockdown price and can confirm that it runs Sierra quite happily with the added bonus that it sleeps too.

So, on balance I would recommend the p300 over the TS140 although both are a joy to work with and very easy to hack.

Thanks for this thread. My ts140 is running like champ with Sierra. I'm using a GT740 SC (GDDR5), and the recommended FW card -- my audio interface is a Metric Halo 2882 that uses FW.

I'm ecstatic!

I'm rolling the dice on the new Monoprice 27", 2K monitor: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=18545
