Hi guys,
Im looking at upgrading to a bluray drive, preferably without disabling the option 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' and one that doesn't spin up every few minutes etc.
I've tried a friends Pioneer BDR-209D and it works flawlessly however it is lost in sleep unless I disable 'put hard disks to sleep when possible'. (I have a few HDD disk and don't want them running all the time thats why I want to keep the option enabled)
I found a LG BH16NS40 however am unsure if it will bring the same problem or not
Has anyone tried the LG drive?

Cheers, Robert

I've just finished building my first Hackintosh build on a GA-Z170X-UD5 TH by following this guide! Thank you so much to Jerivalu and everyone else chiming in on this thread! It was actually a really painless procedure.

Components used:
  • Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH
  • i7-6700k
  • Corsair H100i v2 CPU Cooler
  • 32Gb DDR4 Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • EVGA 1080 Classified (used in Windows because of the lack of webdrivers for OSX)
  • OSX El Capitan 10.11.6
  • Installed using Unibeast 6.2
  • Post installation using Clover 4.34
What currently is working:
  • Restart/Shut Down
    • Fixed by following the steps in the guide (I used the OsxAptioFixDrv, the other version did not work)
  • Audio seems to be working fine
  • iGPU is working fine
    • I installed the intel drivers in Windows, and they completely broke my OSX partition. I couldn't get any output from the HDMI port. Uninstalling the drivers in Windows fixed this.
  • Internet via Ethernet port is working fine
  • All my drives are showing up
  • RAM is showing up
  • Power Management seems to be working fine. The guide to test this seemed to be a bit too comprehensive for me at this moment. https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/mavericks-native-cpu-igpu-power-management.128926/
  • All USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports are working
What currently is not working/problems I'm encountering:

  • iMessage
    • I'm not planning to be using iMessage, so no worries there.
  • Handoff
    • Same here, not planning to be using this.
  • Sometimes when I try to boot into OSX I get this screen. (I have to enable verbose mode to see this, otherwise I get the prohibited sign)
20161029_145451.jpg
I'm not really sure what the problem is. I have to force restart the computer a couple of times. The last 5 boots have been able to boot successfully though.
  • I'm still waiting for my startech thunderbolt adapters, so I have to get back to TH support when I get them.

Thank you once again for this guide!

Hi,

That error that you get sometimeson bootup... i get the exact same. I have the same motherboard as you as well as an evga 1080 FE graphics card. I also have an NVME ssd which takes some pci express lanes also. I found something regarding the high amount of PCI express lanes in our systems causing overlapping early memory area writes. I didnt understand fully the concept and the workaround suggested didnt work for me... however, deactivating the PCI Express slot of the GTX 1080 did clear the problem for good. I now use two Bios presets, one that i load for windows with the integrated graphics deactivated and one that i use for Mac OS X with the GTX 1080 deactivated.

Now i dont know for you, but on my system, before i did this, i could get this error 3 to 5 times in a row before a successful boot and it was unbearable.
Try it, its an easy work around and it might just fix it for you like it did for me.

That is indeed interesting. Unfortunately disabling the PCIe slot on the GPU does not fix it. (if by disabling you mean to just switch under Peripherals -> Initial Display Output -> and switch to the iGPU.)?

I noticed that it is posting something about OsxAptioFix2Drv, I'm pretty sure that I'm not using that, instead I'm just using OsxAptioFixDrv. I'm starting to wonder if I've accidentally turned both of them on. I should check that out.

At least I know someone else got this error! Haha. But I'm getting the same behaviour as you did, it boots into OS X fine for maybe 5 - 6 times and then doing this thing maybe 5 times in a row. It doesn't bother me that much, it is just that my heart stops every time I have to force shut down the computer, because that is the only thing that works.

I'll see what I can find around the forum! Thank you!

Still looking for a solid USB 3.0 fix for this board and it would be great if someone has already mapped their ports and willing to share their USB-SSDT and supporting files. Thanks.

Hi,

Unfortunately it wont work with 10.11.0 as this version of el cap doesnt have the drivers for the skylake platform.

Hi,

Unfortunately it wont work with 10.11.0 as this version of el cap doesnt have the drivers for the skylake platform.

I assume then that Sierra does, correct? I don't know any way to get a copy of 10.11.5 though, now that Sierra is out.

I've had Sierra up and running with a GTX 980Ti card on a Z170X-UD3, but USB 3.0 weren't working and I had to figure that the 3.1 C wasn't working either. If one can get all those USB's working, then Sierra would be do-able.

I also have to assume that it would be good to do a Windows / Thunderbolt drivers hit first to enable TB 2 & 3.

Sierra would have the skylake support yes but i havent installed myself yet so i cant help much with the problems you have faced.

I believe that you can still download the latest version of el capitan in the app store. Have you tried searching for el capitan?

The only thing showing for El Capitan on the Apple app store is the 10.11.6 update which I have downloaded. So I guess I can just install the version of 10.11.0 that I have and do the update. Except now I'm stuck on an install loop with the prohibited icon on the initial install routine and can't get past that to get El Cap installed. I've started a thread about it in the El Cap Desktop Support forum to see if anyone can give me clues as to how to get past this blockage.
