Cool thanks. I wonder does a 8GB sapphire 290x give more less or the same problems (or lack there of problems).... And would we see any improvements in benchmarks like Bruce X? If anyone knows please speak up, got to make my last purchase soon, the almighty fcpx best video card for $200-$300~.

No difference with 4 GB or 8GB. But, take care with 8GB is not a reference card. It's a modified PCB with different bios. I think the way to go is references cards. The only advantage with 8GB could be processing 4K in a soft like Davinci. But no differences in real world.

Ok thanks again.

BruceX - 13-14 seconds with one GPU, 9-10 seconds with 2 GPU's!

Gigabyte MB Z170X-UD5 TH
Intel Skylake Core i7-6700k CPU (not overclocked yet)
Noctua NF-A15 CPU Cooler
32GB Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 2400 DIMMS
Samsung EVO 850 1TB SSD
HGST 4TB Enterprise Drive (also free - recent server pull)
Seasonic X-850 PS
Fractal Design Define R5 Case
Sapphire R9-280X 3GB Dual-X GPU
Sapphire R9-280X 3GB Dual-X GPU (2 of them installed)
OSX 10.11.6 using Clover Bootloader

This does not include the cost of the 2 Sapphire GPU's. I have had them sitting around a while since I used them years ago in former life mining Bitcoins and Litecoins. :)
I never overclocked them and had a very ingenious way of cooling my rigs, so I know they have not been mistreated and would function great in a Hack. Here are some pics of the mining rigs if you are interested. I cooled 32 GPU's with only a single fan and no air conditioning!
32 GPU's hashing without Cooling!

Fun times for sure...but I digress!

I initially installed only one Sapphire R9 280X GPU and ran the BruceX test. It averaged around 13-14 seconds, which I thought was very respectable! I then installed another identical Sapphire GPU and ran it again. The time dropped to about 9-10 seconds, dang fast! I am not sure if I will leave the 2nd GPU installed. I also have another 32GB of ram, but I don't think there will be much if any performance increase.

Have you managed to get Intel QuickSync to work using the iGPU of your processor for H.264 exports? My system has similar specs and I can’t get accelerated exports on Final Cut Pro X.

So I forgot to post back here after my build was done.

Gigabyte z170x UD5 TH
6700K @ 4.8Ghz~ (just can't get higher then that unless I really pour on the voltage)
Phanteks 14pe
G.Skill Trident 3000MHz @ 3636Mhz
AMD Sapphire r9 290x

Bruce X----8.5 secs give or take a tenth of a second.

Hi everyone,

Can anyone explain me what might be the best choice for an affordable FCPX build (with an i7 6700K)?

Video editing with action cams footage mainly... 1080p, 2k, 4k... What I'd love is good performance and little waiting when I edit, I hate it on my MacBook... No gaming etc.

FYI: noob typing...

1. What's the best size for a FCPX GPU? Is it better to start off with a 4GB GPU or with an 8GB GPU?

2. What's better, a 3rd or 4th generation AMD? For 200€ less or more I can find R9 380 4GB & RX470 4GB on Amazon... For a little more I can go for an RX480 4GB... What would you choose? I can go for the 8GB versions too if it's that better...

3. Very distant future upgrades... Will it increase performance noticeably when you double your GPU (weather it's a 4GB or an 8GB GPU) on FCPX? AMD GPUs...

All the GPUs I'm looking at are produced by MSI which, as I've read everywhere, run cooler... Don't know if you can confirm that info too.

Thank you very much!

BruceX test results with different OSX. Video R9 280X 3GB

El Capitan 17,5 sec
Sierra 25,5 sec

Sierra is much slower with the same configuration.

I just got two MSI R9 280X 3GB. I'll put these to test on my next build but I'm curios why is that so @aunaste.

btw, what processor you were using for the test? i7 3770K?
yes
