[Guide] El Capitan on the Intel Skylake NUC

Not open for further replies.
Intel NUC6i5SYH here working fine with:
- latest bios
- 2x8 GB Ram from Kingston HX421S13IBK2/16
- 1 x ssd NVME 950 Pro from Samsung as boot device
- 1 x ssd Sata 3 850 Evo from Samsung

Performances are ... wow :) Disks are super-fast!
Thank you ammulder for this excellent guide!

My main concern is with TRIM for the NVME drive. Is it enabled, how can I check it out?
Is there anyone with a similar setup ?
1) the NVME drive do not show up in System Information:
a) it's not under "NVMExpress" listing ("This computer doesn't contain any NVME...")
b) it's not under "PCI" listing
c) it's not under "SATA/SATA Express" (the 850 EVO is here, however)
d) it does appear under "Storage" with Protocol: PCI
2) I've issued the command "trimforce enable" and the disk 850 EVO -- in point (c) above -- appears with Trim!
3) But for the NVME 950 PRO there is not report

I suppose the NVME 950 PRO is considered as an external drive by OSX? May be.
How can I check if TRIM has been enabled for this drive?
Any help would be appreciated :)

You need to install the NVME driver. You can find the donwload link in the first post. I'm using the same SSD and everything is running fine using this driver.

Hi donomark ... I've the same SSD (Samsung NVME 950 PRO 512GB) ... it's working fine but my NVME drive do not show up in any section of System Report! Is the same for you?

I cannot see if the TRIM is enabled: have you checked this out ?

Thanks.

I'ts me again :)

If someone else has the same issue with the NUC6I5SYH and the Intel Iris graphics 540 i'm happy to say that i could get it working as expected..

The only issue was, that i had to change the ig-platform-id to 0x19260002 and reboot... since then everything graphic related is working fine.

I've found the following list from where i got the right platform id. probably usefull for someone else too.

0x191e0000 - Intel® HD Graphics 515..........(ULX GT2)
0x19160000 - Intel® HD Graphics 520..........(ULT GT2)
0x19260000 - Intel® Iris™ Graphics 550.......(ULT GT3)
0x191b0000 - Intel® HD Graphics 530..........(Halo GT2)
0x193b0000 - Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 580...(Halo GT4)
0x19120000 - Intel® HD Graphics 530..........(Desktop GT2)
0x19160002 - Intel® HD Graphics 520..........(ULT GT2)
0x19260002 - Intel® Iris™ Graphics 540.......(ULT GT3)
0x191e0003 - Intel® HD Graphics 515..........(ULX GT2)
0x19260004 - Intel® Iris™ Graphics 540.......(ULT GT3)
0x193b0005 - Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 580...(Halo GT4)
0x193b0006 - Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 580...(Halo GT4)

Fantastic! It works by using 0x19260002 :)
Now I can even use CompuBenchCL test and Apple Maps works perfectly!
Don't you think the main guide at post #1 needs to be updated with this info as well ?

Hi
The Dell p2415q Monitor (with 3840 x 2160 resolution) seems to work fine with retina display modes.

Kind regards,
Smoc

I've not been able to check TRIM while using the NVMeGeneric.kext: my disk is listed as an external one.

However, thanks to others excellent threads here in the forum, I've been able to apply an experimental patch to IONVMeFamily.kext and it works.
If anyone is interested, more info on the following thread (but - as for now - pls consider that it's highly experimental, read the blog referenced there).

My NUC is working great except for the random audio problems which I usually solve by putting the computer to sleep for 10 seconds then back on again.

Also, preview doesn't work at all. Anyone know how to keep it from crashing?

Same problem with preview, I guess it have something to do with graphics drivers?
Sound works most of the time but maximum output volume is lower than normal

Hi,

the same situation for me. I can't verify if trim is enabled but I've run the command sudo trimforce enable in the terminal and the result of the operation seems fine. At the moment I don't know of any other way to verify if trim is woring properly..

If you use patched IONVMeFamily, trim will be enabled.

Hello,
i read every page of this thread (maybe my english is not the best), but i found no solution for the problem i get installing el capitan on a nuc6i5syh. I try to install el capitan on my nuc with 2x 8GB DDR4 Ram and a 128GB Samsung 951 NVME SSD. And thats the problem: after booting and the screen where i choose the language there is no harddrive to install OSX, it seems that the nvme drive is not available. I tryed the installation like the post on page one.

Has anyone tried this guide with the new NUC6i7KYK? This new NUC has awesome specs!
