10.11.4+ Skylake Starter Guide

Make sure you have XHCI Hand off set to enabled in the your BIOS.

Wildwillow your a star! It should be noted that I was working from the guide for gigabyte MBs at http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/recommended-bios-uefi-settings-for-beginners.130920/ which doesn't mention enabling XHCI but I have seen it mentioned in other posts - but thank you.

So I got El Cap installed to my M2 sata and ran Multicast to start putting in some drivers and then rebooted and it freezes with the stop sign after around 60 seconds of progress. Maybe I injected the wrong drivers I don't know, I tried.

Please see attached Pic in verbose, this goes off after a while and it just says "still waiting for root device" on a blank screen with the stop sign, then after around 2 mins the screen fills with more text that is garbage?

Oh and the HD light is just constantly flashing!

really appreciate your help

You missed a step, remember installing the GenericNVMe.kext to your USB? now you need to install it to same location on your OS X installation drive. MultiBeast doesn't contain this kext, its for the early adopters.
To do this boot your UniBeast USB and select your new installation drive again, mount your installation drives EFI partition, install the GenericNVMe.kext to the EFI/Clover/Kexts/10.11 folder. Restart and test booting your installation driver itself.

Wildwillow: Once again a lifesaver - managed to do the above and system now boots on its own!

I think everyone here has hassles and problems to resolve on a new build, and thanks to you I'm 90% there I think, just a bit of tweaking and some unanswered questions. I really hate asking you as you have been so helpful already?

Anyway if you or anyone has any thoughts on the following I'd be happy to hear them:

1. How do you know that your system is working properly once you think you've done?
2. My screen flashes with bars across when it first loads the El Capitan Background, it makes me think the Intel 530 Driver isnt working, but it does list the hardware in sys prefs? Also there are no screen preferences or ways of adjusting display settings and it states that the screen res is set by the default for the monitor?
3. If you run multibeast again to add something does it ruin what you have already done (e.g. would it delete my NVM kext file from the UEFI?
4. In hardware it lists my M2 Sata at one point, but under NVMExpress column it says no hardware attached?
5. On the forum I've seen someone load an NVM.efi file into drivers, have I missed this?
6. The progress bar on startup takes 4 times longer than my old Macbook, is this normal for a Hackintosh or is this a problem with the NVM driver as in 4 and 5 above?
7. I have Win 10 installed on a standard SSD but I'm damned if it works from Clover, only when I press F12 and manually select the drive to boot: Is this a major issue to solve?

Once the above is sorted I can ponder on buying a graphics card (I've read loads on here about ATI vs Nvidia) and then finally load FCP X (why I might be better with ATI?) which is why I built the damn thing in the first place!

Incredible thanks going out to you once again wildwillow, can't wait to hear back from you (or anyone). Thank you.

1. How do you know that your system is working properly once you think you've done?
If the system works for your needs, no need to fix what isn't broken. There are always ways to optimise your system, depends on how far you're willing to go.

Your graphics are not accelerated, no QE/CI. Download Clover Configurator, mount your EFI partition, open your config.plist with Clover Configurator, navigate to Graphics, ensure Inject Intel √ and enter ig-platform-id=0x19120000. Close, save, restart and test graphics. Make sure you're using a digital connection.

3. If you run multicast again to add something does it ruin what you have already done (e.g. would it delete my NVM kext file from the UEFI?
No MultiBeast won't delete items by adding extra selections.

4. In hardware it lists my M2 Sata at one point, but under NVMExpress column it says no hardware attached?
Apple only supports their own NVMe SSD, you're using a 3rd party driver and your drive will show under Storage.

5. On the forum I've seen someone load an NVM.efi file into drivers, have I missed this?
No Idea, haven't used or tested this, I have OS X on an AHCI SSD, not NVMe.

6. The progress bar on startup takes 4 times longer than my old Macbook, is this normal for a Mackintosh or is this a problem with the NVM driver as in 4 and 5 above?
I imagine your graphics (fix above) are not initialising, hence the laggy white lines making your boot really slow, test HD530 graphics injection which should improve your boot times.

7. I have Win 10 installed on a standard SSD but I'm damned if it works from Clover, only when I press F12 and manually select the drive to boot: Is this a major issue to solve?
To boot UEFI Windows 10, at the Clover menu boot Microsoft EFI from EFI should load Windows 10.

@wildwillow,

I have tried using EFI MounterV3 to mount my El Capitan's EFI partition (from the newly-accessed desktop) but I get an "AppleEventHandler" error. If I open the "Edit" option after this happens, I see the program, but if I cllick "run," the program exits with a note that it exited with a "nonzero" value. What does that mean? I was booted into Safe mode; is that the problem? (This is a new Skylake build: Core i7 6700, Gigabyte GA-H170N-WIFI mobo.)

What would I do without you wildwillow?? Thanks yet again - I'm at work and really cheesed off that its going to be nearly 8 hours until I can try your fix as above - just want it working NOW!

What are your personal thoughts (i.e. what would you do?) on Graphics cards specifically for FCP X?

For ATI - I have read no problems setting up an older R280x and works like a charm with FCP x
Against - older technology and yet nearly the cost of newer cards - will R280x run 4K monitor because had some forum members (high standing one's too) say yes and some say no (specs say no) so i'm confused?

For NVidia - Newer tech and decent pricing - will deffo run at 4K
Against Nvidia - Mixed results with drivers - some users getting comparable performance to ATI but others not so. Also newer cards (1070/80) massive spec but wont work but are close in price to lower models like 970/80?

Gotta make a choice, cant stay on HD530 for 4K video editing forever? Decision time? Thanks to all

Hi there, I'm a total Noob here but I just did similar to this under instruction from wildwillow:

He told me to boot from the install USB then select the OS X install: I was then able to run EFI Mounter V3 (no mention of safe mode) and edit my kext folder; for what its worth hope this helps.

.

This was already in config.plist (see attached shot) and BTW I'm using HDMI as my monitor has no DVI (just HDMI and DSUB) is this anything to do with the issue?

Post a screen shot of : About This Mac > System Report > Graphics/Displays
HDMI is ok just not the D-Sub connector.
Make a copy of IOReg and attach it here, App is at the bottom of Post#1.

attached x 2 can't thank you enough....PS running on DSUB (temporarily) because it crashes every few minutes and i just can't get anything done - this is why in display it shows 800x600 graphics
