I installed this card just now and it appears to work as advertised. It has a header to hook up the 2 front USB 3 ports, so I now have two USB 3 ports on the front of my Define R4 in addition to the 5 on the back that this card adds. Nice thing too is that it has an internal power hookup so I can charge my devices from the front ports. Nice card.

Good to know that USB 3 card works OOB. Could be on my socking stuffer list.

Stork,

In your instructions for updating to 10.11.4 you mention upgrading to the latest Clover as an option. How would a person do that?

Thanks.

You can use Clover Configurator to update to the latest version of Clover. However, there are several issues/problems with the latest version, so I recommend you hold off until I get more information. (I've never updated Clover from the version that MultiBeast installs. I'll ask tonymacx86 or MacMan when I can and report back here.)

OK thanks so much. I had Googled it and found a YouTube on how to do it and was going to try it this evening...glad I didn't.

I'll wait to hear from you.

Question:

Can I upgrade this build by swapping in the following components:

Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 ATX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170X-UD5
Intel Boxed Core I7-6700K 4.00 GHz 8M Processor Cache 4 LGA 1151 BX80662I76700K
Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 64GB Kit (16GBx4) DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DIMM 288-Pin - BLS4K16G4D240FSB (Gray)
Zalman CPU Cooler for Intel Socket 1155/1156/1366/775 and AMD Socket FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2 CNPS8000B

Now that should be a nice beast! But, I'll miss you in this thread.

As for the swapping, here is what I'd recommend to save a lot of pain. Do a fresh install on a new drive. Then, in the second part of the installation, use Migration Assistant to bring over your account(s), apps, et al, from the old drive. In the Migration Assistant do not check the Other Files box. Lastly, run the latest edition of MultiBeast for El Captain.

Alternatively, you can use tonymacx86's Clover Basics and Switching Advice. But, I think this is more bother than it's worth.

Good Luck!

I took all those components directly from the Customac Pro list of the April buyer's guide. I'm assuming these will stay the same for the May guide...

I haven't fully decided to do this yet, so don't lament my departure too soon! ;)

Thanks for the advice about migration. I guess I should add a new SSD to this list then...

I strayed off the ranch, so to speak, for my Z170 build. I choose the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII GENE motherboard for this year's project. Works great, but it's BIOS has a high learning curve for me after all these years using Gigabyte motherboards.

I also like the Gigabyte GTX 950 graphics card, too, which I recommend to you. However, you may want to wait for the newer Nvidia 1000 cards. Their new top-of-the-line GTX 1080 and 1070 will be out late May and early June, respectively. So, by Summer's end, I expect to see a GTX 1060 and 1050 series if they go the same route as their previous 900 line of graphics cards.

Speaking of graphics, the 100-series motherboards and Intel processors on-board HD530 graphics still has some minor, PITA problems, namely, sleep/wake-up. So, keep abreast of the progress on the HD530 issues if you decide not to use your GT640 card.

Looking forward to seeing the results of your new system.
