Hey guys,
For some reason, I am unable to successfully overclock my Skylake Hackintosh. Its not the overclock which is the problem here, since I can successfully boot into Windows 10 after OCing. I have also tested the stability of my PC by stressing it using various softwares.

However, OS X El Cap gets stuck at the 'VM Subsystem is On' step while booting. Screenshot below.
It does not matter how much I try to overclock my CPU by, even if I change the BCLK frequency to 107 for a 200MHz OC, the system stops booting at the same point. On Windows, I have managed to successfully OC my 6500 to as high as 3.8GHz. I am guessing this has something to do with the CPU P/C states, because when I do a normal boot, the CPU P/C states show many different states compared to what is shown in the screenshot.

I have tried changing my SSDT.aml, disabling C/P states in BIOS etc, but to no avail. What could I be doing wrong here? Any idea?

PC config:

Core i5 - 6500 @ 3.2GHz Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 5 8GB Corsair LPX DDR4 RAM Sapphire R9 270X

I'm running a Skylake (6700K) system @ 4.7Ghz (with speed stepping) and I don't use SSDT or DSDTs.

I get the full range of CPU power steps too. With Clover and runtime patching, I'm yet to understand the big benefit of DSDT/SSDT files.

Try without them (if you use Clover, that is).

I suspect you got this working already as you haven't posted again... I suspect the release of 10.11.4 resolved this for you??

TL/DR >
1. Ensure CPU Virtualisation is OFF in bios/uefi
2. Try Faking the CPU ID with Clover
3. Note: Assuming you are installing and boot is failing >Probably safe to Ignore this if you have already successfully installed and got USB3 working. ||

3 cont > If this is installing OSX ensure you are using a USB2 port until POST install/USB3 is patched/fixed (some Unsupported USB protocol errors in your screenshot > 12 and 18 lines above VM error)

Some Extra Stuff/other info >>

I know this link is for Yosemite, but it could still prove to be useful?

Additionally I have seen a few bits and bobs around various sites/threads that indicates BCLK overclocking may not be fully supported with Hackintosh without SSDT or DSDTs (i think mostly due to BCLK OC's fudging the power states, at least as far as i can tell).

You could try putting the NullCPUPowerManagement kext into action as it might help with getting past certain issues with BCLK OC'ing (i think Option 1 above should do the trick though..)

Try clover to inject a fake CPU ID. Overclocking via BCLK could make the auto detected CPU ID be invalid..

I was looking into getting a similar build to what you have but decided to go with a K version Skylake CPU (Buying next week) for safer/simpler overclocking under hackintosh.

I really hope this helps

And how it is you managed such remarkable figures without any of the above? how do you measure the Ghz output of your CPU, Intel Gadet perhaps??

Sorry double post :(

Thanks for your reply. I had tried everything, including what you said above, to no avail. Ended up buying a 6600K. OCing it with multiplier, it works fine. Changing the BCLK frequency leads me to run into the same set of issues

mm Intel doesn't like us using BCLK to OC, that's too cost effective :p lol

seem OSX doens't like it either, i just got a 6600K (over a 6500) in case i run into these same issues (for an extra like $50 AUD I think the saved headache is worth it + future proof)

BCLK overclock works just fine in Windows. Whatever the case might be, good decision to go for the 6600K. At least my mistake will help others. :p

Any luck guys?

I have a 6700k and its OC to 4.6ghz on windows just fine using just the multiplier. In OSX it will only go up to 4ghz according to HW monito and Intel Gadget.

I have an Asus Z170-K and installed using the Unibeast and multibeast, and everything else is working well

Hmm something else seems wrong. I can OC my 6600K to 4.4GHz easily under OS X. Does the BIOS say 4.6GHz? Then its just a matter of you editing the config.plist and updating the CPU related kexts perhaps?
