I'm looking for some opinions on this X99 hackintosh build that I would like to overclock to the highest and safest level and also keep the noise level to a minimum. This will be used for music production only i.e running Ableton/Logic X and lots of Vsti's and samples etc...
Also I plan on using Yosemite.

Below is planned build list -

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i GTX Liquid CPU Cooler ( Or an Air Cooler )?..

Case Fan: Corsair Air Series SP120 Quiet Edition (2-Pack) 37.9 CFM 120mm Fans (to replace the stock Corsair H110i fans)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ( or UD4P version )

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card

Case: Fractal Design Define R5 w/Window (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply: Corsair RM750i 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Any advice would be very appreciated

nice setup! what about a better sound interface? i think with the soundcard at the x99 you won't get happy..

Many Thanks,

I have in mind a simple Audio Interface such as the Scarlett 12 USB

You don't need such a high performance graphics card for a DAW so go for a low powered offering that supports the number of screens you will be using.

I use internal graphics (Intel HD4000) on my system and it's just fine with Reason and Garage Band !

Also you shouldn't need a 750w PSU, a 500w should be ample ! (sorry IGNORE MY PSU COMMENT AS YOU'RE OVERCLOCKING)

Thank for your advice,

Would you know of any basic GPU's that would be a good choice for my setup, perhaps wouldn't need web drivers to work?

Many thanks

Noodlez

Go for one of the EVGA GT 740 Graphics cards based on the Nvidia GPU as they appear to not require alternative graphics drivers so in theory should work OOB in OSX

See Tonymac Buyers Guide : Graphics Cards

Also before you choose a power supply, use a PSU Calculator as this lets you input the number parts and peripherals your setup will be using + you can estimate more parts for future expansion.

The calculator will tell you how much power you will need which means you don't have to go overboard on Watts when buying PSU.

Modern CPU's are so power efficient these days that people (including myself on a 650watt PSU) go too high for their usage.

Hi thanks for your advice,

I think I may go for this one -

EVGA Nvidia GeForce GT 740 Superclocked Graphics Card (2GB, GDDR5, PCI Express 3.0)

Hi Noodles,

How did this build go? I'm planning on using the same parts, just wondered if you encountered any problems along the way? This is my first build so any help / guidance would be massively appreciated!

Hi, I found building it the easy bit! Just watched a few youtube vids help.

Once everything is built I followed this guide which is the best one around in my opinion

Best of luck!

Thanks very much, I hadn't seen the El Capitan one! Really helpful.

I take it all the audio side of things works ok? External interfaces, firewire etc?
