Hi there, I'm a noob but have spent the last 2 days devouring the forum and learning alot. If I phrase things wrongly or show signs of misunderstanding please correct me.
I have been running 10.8.5 for ages so recently decided to use a spare SSD to try El Capitan 10.11.3.
At first I think I used Chimera to create a USB with Unibeast and I eventually got it installed and working, although only one screen was working and it wasn't displaying fulll screen, the aspect ratio was also off. I downloaded the latest Nvidia 10.11.3 compliant web drivers and more or less immediately both my screens were displaying wonderfully at full resolution. Then I went to bed, woke up the next day, and could not get my El Capitan SSD to boot fully.
During this whole process I was learning alot about Clover. So I decided to start again and make a Clover USB. I got to completing installation (using the USB bootloader and then mounting the SSD) after a few hickups, and everything seemed fine, except the screen. Again only one monitor working and at the wrong resolution. So then I installed the latest 10.11.3 compliant Nvidia web drivers and restarted the machine. But this time the Nvidia drivers didn't seem to be working - the second monitor remained without a signal and the first monitor remained at the wrong resolution.
I have the Nvidia preference pane and menu, and Nvidia web drivers are selected (though this is redundant apparently as I'm using the nvda_drv=1 bootflag), but there is no difference between before and after installation of the drivers.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with frequent reboots... no difference. I've had some slightly irratic startup behaviour as well, getting the No Entry sign and Kernel panics etc... but it's pretty stable now.
I noticed in the Nvidia preference pane, under the ECC tab, that each slot displays "no device found", not sure if that's important. However, the graphics card does show in the "About this mac" window under "OVERVIEW" and also under "DISPLAYS". But under "displays" it just shows one monitor which it lists as 17.8" 1024x768 (my monitors are actually 22").
In my SDD EFI "drivers64uefi" directory i have:
- FSInject-6.efi
- HFSPlus.efi
- OsxAptioFix2Drv-64.efi (tried replacing this with OsxAptioFixDrv-64.efi to no avail)
- OsxFatBinaryDrv-64.efi
In my kexts for both 10.11 and 10.10 i have:
- AppleIntelIE1000e.kext
- AtherosE2200Ethernet.kext
- FakeSMC.kext
- RealtekRTL8111.kext
I haven't changed anything else in the EFI.
Using Clover Configurator I've also tried different SMBIOS. MacPro5.1, MacPro3.1, iMac14.2 and currently iMac14.1. I've tried a ton of different bootflag settings. But nothing works.
I'm thinking about creating a new USB with Chimera as at least that seemed to work the first time. But I've heard so much good stuff about Clover I feel this is the wrong way to go. Surely clover can fix this.
Advice greatly appreciated.
