I've basically got a 32 gig 8 core beast of a machine running Yosemite 10.10 but I get something like 2 and 4 megabytes per second write/read going up against a NAS device that's Ethernet connected to a 1 gigabit port on my network router.

By contrast, my wife's windows machine gets closer to 25 megs/sec on write and 50 megs/sec on reads.

Both machines are connected wirelessly to a 5ghz channel and the router is in the same room.

Not sure what to tweak but something seems wrong.

Any suggestions are welcome.

What make and model is the NAS? What protocol are you using to connect to the NAS - your wife is, of course, using SMB; but you might be using AFP or NFS - perhaps your NAS has better support for SMB. I'm just taking guesses here without any more information.

It's a Western Digital MyCloud that I've got all my music and movies on. It's perfectly good from either Windows or Ubuntu. But I've also got a macbook air and it's extremely slow against it also.

The device is an SMB device. I hadn't tried connecting through other protocols but once I saw your note, I tried with SMB, AFP, and CIFS. I couldn't get NFS to work but not sure I'm specifying that correctly.

Same result regardless of protocol used to connect. I would guess that Apple's implementation of SMB might not be up to snuff.

What else should I try? MIght there be an SMB kext out there that does a more industry standard job etc?

Thanks,

CIFS is basically an Microsoft-specific "dialect" of SMB. It's rarely used anymore. Apple's implementation of SMB is perfectly fine; in fact, as of Mavericks they switched from AFP to SMB as the default protocol for file sharing.

I used to have a Western Digital NAS device, and I had a lot of problems with it. I have an Asustor AS-204TE NAS now, and am very happy with it (I use AFP and SMB to connect to it).

At any rate, here are a couple of things to check:
  1. Is the firmware on your MyDrive up-to-date?
  2. What kind of network connection do you use to connect to the MyCloud? You want the fastest connection possible between it and your router (Gigabit Ethernet is best).
  3. I don't recall if there is any advanced logging you can turn on to try to see what's going on, but that's worth checking into.
