I heard that AMD Radeons are much better for FCP X because of of better OpenCL support. Nvidia are great for everything else because of CUDA. My question is why there isn't even one AMD card on the recommended list here? All I see is Nvidias.

I understand but my question is why tonymacx86 does not recommend one AMD card? I see that you have R9 280X. This is the card I am interested in. How hard was it to make it work with Yosemite or El Capitan?

For the CustoMac configuration components, the current crop of nVidia work essentially OOB with the nVidia Web drivers. No need for doing framebuffer dancing especially for multiple monitor use. The R9 280(x) cards are manufacturer and model # dependent since Apple hasn't updated the AMD drivers since the 7900 series. So, you'll need to use a R9 280(x) with the same Reference Design monitor port arrangement as Apple's 7950 which was a Ref Design card.

I guess another reason is that Chimera/Chameleon was never 100% compatible with the latest AMD cards.

My R9 280 works perfectly fine OOB without any work at all. Most other R9 280(X) should, too, just stay away from XFX.
If possible, get a card with 2xmDP.
