Universal Audio Apollo Twin Thunderbolt on Hackintosh

Hi I own an Apollo Twin Solo that I use with my macbook retina and Mac Mini server.
So thunderbolt and Apollo are basically the only things keeping me from jumping into Hackintosh.

I think I'll need to build a Hack around it but I'm really intimidated.

I'm now running OS X 10.11 El Capitan, with Pro Tools 12.2.1. So far everything is running good, and the Apollo is running fine. I also use a pair of the virtual channels for system sounds as well, so I have control of the volume within Console.
Slate Plugins are running fine (the error they have is with Logic Pro AU validation) as are Waves, Softube P&M and obviously UAD.
Cheers

hi mate i am building a hack pro with the same mother board as yours as i have the apollo twin as well.
i am wondering where did you buy yours? as it is listed in amazon uk for £418 but in U.S it is list at $200.

did you find this?

also can you tell me if the updated apollo software runs well as i see in the vid you have the older software

thanks mate:)

I am running the latest Update 8.4 which is working great!
About buying I can´t tell you anything. Have bought mine on resale.

All the Best Martin

This may be an ignorant question... I am wanting to build a hackintosh with Thunderbolt 2 capability to use with Apollo 8p. I've selected the gigabyte UD7 TH. Are there different Thunderbolt chipsets? Is the gigabyte TB2 port inherently different from the one on an iMac, for example, or are they the exact same?

The Apollo itself will use its own drivers under OS X, but it will rely on a thundebrolt 2 connection to interface with the computer. The interface only supports OS X, so there are no Windows drivers. Since UA only tests on Apple hardware, is it possible that even if I get thunderbolt working on my hackintosh, that it is not working 100% "accurately" in OS X? In other words, is it possible there could be tiny glitches in the audio using the Apollo because there is a communication issue between the audio interface and the motherboard because it is a different thunderbolt chipset from an Apple computer? Or maybe there is only one thunderbolt chipset out there?

I guess my question is, while the audio interface driver would work under OS X, is it possible the connection between the OS and the interface could be "compromised" and not work right, even if the driver works correctly? I don't know enough about how thunderbolt works to know if this is a silly question, but I believe there are all sorts of USB 3 and ethernet chipsets, which cause all sorts of unexpected issues on computers, so I'm wondering if it's the same with thunderbolt, and that I would get "inaccurate" or glitchy audio through thunderbolt on a hackintosh. Thank you for the help!

Hi guys

Iam currently running a Dual Boot setup (El Capitan/Windows 10) on a Gigabyte GA-Z97X G1 WIFI BK and Intel CPU 4790k and Corsair Vengence 4X4GB DDR3 1600MHZ.

Will this GC-Thunderbolt 2 card http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5210#ov work on my system in EL Capitan for Apolle Duo or is there a workaround for it?

If not, then I will need some advice for the most rock solid/future proof and rapid build possible for music production using Apollo etc.

Thanks in advance

Hey,

I'm a mixer in Nashville, TN. I've been using a Hackintosh for all my production for the past few years. I'm planning on upgrading to the Z97X-UD7 TH board with thunderbolt and I have a new UAD-2 Satellite Octo Thunderbolt. I've been using the PCI stably for years and just wanted to get your take on the build. I saw that you had a similar system and wanted to ask you, how difficult was the install / bios / workaround coding in order to get the system rock solid? Have you used the board with Mavericks or just Yosemite and El Captain? I'm running intensive mix sessions all day and I can't afford to be spending a lot of time dealing with troubleshooting. Do you have any tips for this build or have any tips for ways to optimize the system for production? It's also nice to see other audio professionals using Hackintosh.

Hi !

I just got a new build based on the z87x ud7 th mobo, and it's been pretty easy to set up as the thunderbolt almost worked out of the box. I'm using the last el capitan os version.

The only issue I'm working on is that, on the first boot, the apollo twin is detected by the system manager in the thunderbolt section, but the universal audio tools cannot connect the appolo. I have to click on the "disconnect card" in the tunderbolt mac os toolbar (don't really how to name it), it freeze the OS, make it reboot, and then the apollo is well detected by universal audio tools.

in a few word, I boot (with TH device plugged and on), I've to virtually disconnect the device, freeze, reboot, it's ok.

Any idea of the issue here ?

I guess its related to the hotplug issue, but here I'm not hotplugging the device...

Beside this little issue on "first boot", its works great. The apollo twin is usable in logic X and protools 11.

Thanks guys for your support :)

I am interested in this build you have! I have the apollo twin thunderbolt and i am very scared to build something without it working with the thunderbolt connection!
