No Audio Devices - Realtek ALC AppleHDA [Guide]

OK, so I put in the kext from post #127 of the NUC thread using KextBeast and rebooted.

An audio device is found!

I have it set to audio device "Headphones", which is what I used under Yosemite and what worked there (with headphones plugged into the audio out jack on the NUC).

There is a problem with the channels/levels though. On one song I tried, the instruments are fine but the voices are very faint. It's like it's trying to do 5.1 channels and giving me only the L & R channels over the headphones but not the center channel.

When you say "Temporarily remove ALC kext patching," I took that to mean I should remove all the KextsToPatch entries relating to audio from CLOVER/config.plist. There were two, with comments "t1-110.9-10.11-AppleHDA/Realtek ALC283" and "t1-AppleHDA/Resources/xml>xml" so I removed them. The strange audio levels seem the same with or without them.

Anyway, here's the latest IOJones: View attachment nuc-v4.iojones

Dang! Audio Fixed! Two birds / one stone.

I just noticed I had a pending system update in App Store, which I hadn't looked for because I thought I was already on the latest.

After installing that update and then re-installing the AppleHDA kext from post #127, I get an audio device and it's fully working! At the moment I do have a few audio KextsToPatch entries -- after the update I had a new AppleHDA and I tried the cloverALC script without success before reinstalling the kext from #127.

I'm going to try to reinstall all this from scratch and see if I can reproduce and document.

Just want to confirm with a fresh install of El Capitan Public Beta 6 on the NUC5i7 (ALC283):

  • audio_cloverALC-110.command.zip does not work for me -- the script runs but it still does not result in an audio device being found
  • The AppleHDA.kext found here does work for me -- the audio device is found and headphone output works.

I think that means that I'll need to re-install the kext potentially after every update (rather than Clover handling it automagically), but that's what worked for me. If there's more troubleshooting to be done for the script, I'm happy to help, but otherwise I'm content with the kext solution.

Remove config.plist/KernelAndKextPatches/KextsToPatch/Item x/t1-10.11-AppleHDA/Realtek ALC... patch.
Reply with new IOJones.

Both attached AppleHDAs are damaged and not working.
Run MultiBeast 7 - Select: Drivers > Audio > Realtek ALCxxx > √ ALC 892
Restart. Reply with all new files.

Thanks for the quick reply Toleda. I just want to note that when running Multibeast 7, i did so from my stable preset config file, but obviously made the changes you requested. Reason being that when i simply launching Multibeast, and selecting Drivers > Audio > Realtek ALCxxx > √ ALC 892 without selecting anything else, the system would not even boot due to incorrect flags and graphics driver settings.

So the current configuration is as my last multibeast preset (so i could regain control of my system) but with the audio settings you stated. Is this OK? Thanks

Yes. See Post #1/Unsupported/Non working Realtek ALC AppleHDA/3. Asus P8P67 3xxx BIOS: Phantom codec

Thanks Toleda, just want to confirm that i'm clear here... your analysis points to my BIOS as the reason for failure correct?

So the ONLY available solution, is for me to downgrade my BIOS: mobo AMIBIOS v.2.10.1208 (2011) from 2011 to an earlier version correct?

I will await yoru answer before even thinking of downgrading my BIOS, i'm not even sure its possible but i will read up on it.

I'm not sure what this number means: 887_v100201. Is this the version number of my AppleHDA.kext? (sorry to ask but i have no idea how to find out version numbers).

Again many thanks for helping me out. Champion!
