for final cut pro x? ( r290x or gtx970)

so i plan to build a editing machine, main use final cut pro x.
I want to be able to edit 4k videos.
Im editing shorter 4K videos on my macbook 13 (retina).
And it works pretty good. but the export could be faster, and editing could be more fluid.

At first I have been looking into GTX760, seems to work for most people.

but I know there are more powerful graphics cards.
Like GTX970... or r290x

I'l be honest, I just want it to work.. and from what i've read GTX760 is basically no problem.
and if I want to go for something more deluxe like GTX970, Do I have to mess with the terminal and stuff?

What do you guys think?

If you want it to just work then GTX 760 is the way to go.

The GTX 970 currently requires the web drivers and they break each time that there is an operating system update that changes the build number.

R9 290X is currently not supported OoB.
For FCPX your best bet is R9 280X.

Your best bet is a 280X, whilst the nVidia cards work, the price performance of them is very poor. Somebody has reported that they have managed to get a nVidia Titan X to do the Bruce X benchmark (I'd suggest you Bing it rather than Google it but I don't want to offend you so I won't) in 26 seconds. Thats pretty good but still slower than a pair of 280X cards which are half the price in total

If you are serious about FCP X then you do not have much options, you have to go with AMD, if you are the occasional user then an nVidia card will be fine, it will be significantly slower but for using once or twice a year for kids parties, its not an issue.

Just to be clear, there are no issues with nVidia cards, all the FCP X functionality works, its just that they are slow with FCP X. If you want to play Battlefield 4 for six hours a day, then they are pretty good.

I don't edit 4K videos but I have done the Bruce X benchmark which is a 4K (ish) benchmark.

I have no issues doing the Bruce X benchmark at all. However since i've never edited a 4K video, I can;t comment on how smooth it is. I supposed I could put one together but am now on holiday as of today and am away from the computer for ten days.

I've no doubt the 280X will support 4K very well, but you might want to address your question in more relevant forums where real editors can help you. I'm a developer and aspiring video editor.

Question, how come it doesn't support? the iMac 5k has r9 290x...
so there should be drivers for the Hackintosh right?

Yes, I run two DVI monitors off a single card. I couldn't get 2 x DVI and an HDMI to work though. Triple monitors seems difficult, but as i have two cards I run the third monitor off the second card. The monitors are for development though rather than FCP X.
