Solving NVIDIA driver install problems

Ran out of chickens. Today, normal startup doesn't work. BIOS set to "Optimized Defaults," except Memory to "Profile 1" (1600 MHz DDR3 setup), "Initial Graphics" to "PCIe," "IGFX" to "Disable," "ERp" to "Enable" (turns off external USB power when shut down, which disables power LEDs on external USB switches).
Boot process goes like this (with GT 740 card installed): Press power on button; normal boot up to and through the TonyMac screen, Apple logo shows on white screen with progress bar, which makes it about 1/3 complete, then screen goes black, video shuts down, video comes back up, black screen with active progress bar, progress completes, then screen goes white. Cursor is frozen, keyboard is frozen. Then I press the Restart button, screen goes black, then white, then I finally get the desktop.
Using "Shutdown" in Mac OS X kills video (black screen), but the computer power never goes off until I press and hold the Power button on the computer.
The above varies; sometimes even restarting after the screen goes white (above) results again in a white screen. But at least half the time, the desktop comes up and computer operates normally (until shutdown).
More suggestions? Please note that I have already once used my Unibeast USB stick and using Disk Utility, with the GT 740 not installed, re-partitioned my "Yosemite" SSD, made a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.3, ran Multibeast with no "Graphics Enabler" or "IGFX" flags, and everything worked perfectly with no GT 740 card. Adding the card (whether or not setting up the BIOS for the card, as I wrote in my original post) causes the booting and shutdown screw-ups.
