Mac G5 ATX Conversion - Noob Attempt 2

The case I bought included every piece of original hardware but the HDD. I bought it for 40 euros, which is a bit less than 30 British pounds. I intend to use most of the original hardware of the G5. For you this might be a good option as well; G5's aren't that expensive these days. However as I mentioned above I have a working Hackintosh within a standard case, so I probably also end up using some of that case's parts. I'll keep you updated with pictures as soon as I made progress.

I'll start working on it right now. :p

Thats a very good find! Good job ;)

For my last G5 I also used the previous case to salvage parts from, worked quite well!

Good luck! You should create a thread like this one so you can show everything off to the entire community :)

Yea will do this evening.

Edit: don't have much time anymore today so I'll do it tomorrow or the day after. I can say however that my motherboard fits perfectly. Pics / thread soon! How are you doing now, Jack?

How are you doing now, Jack?

I'm still researching hard drive solutions, but I expect I'll go with what I said in my previous post about the thing on eBay! 3.5" is the size bay I want, even though I'll probably use 2.5" drives!

Okay, so I've just bought the original thing that I had in mind.

Unfortunately it can only hold 2.5" drives which doesn't quite accomplish what I wanted, but I guess I could install 2 ssd's for the same combined space along with a laptop hdd.

To reiterate, this is the item:

It cost me around £7 and is Prime eligible so I should get it this coming Tuesday and I should be able to fit it in the same evening, as I'm pretty sure I have some nuts and bolts laying around from doing the back panel!

Once this is installed the case build is complete. I may continue the thread with the hardware installation but it depends on how long it takes me to get the hardware together! But I'll certainly type up a conclusion once the hard drive mount is fitted - shame its black though!

So yesterday it arrived; and just like always I didn't get time to fit it! So the way my time stands at the minute means its probably gonna be a Sunday job!

I'll get back to everyone then :)

So the time is upon us, yesterday I finally got around to fitting the hard drive bay, the last case item to be installed...

Here are some images:

So I drilled 4 holes in the mounting arms, and yes, I know they're not all even and in line but it can't be seen so I didn't see it as a huge issue really!

Here you can see I drilled 4 holes which more or less lined up with the ones drilled in the actual unit above.

Here you can see the screws I used, I screwed them all in just a little to make sure that the drilled holes were alright and there were no issues with the holes themselves.

After knowing the screws would fit, I cut them down so they wouldn't be an issue when I fit the CD/DVD drive. In the second picture I hadn't quite finished cutting them all down, but you get the idea!

Soon enough I'll do a write up and mark the conversion as completed! Its taken me a bit longer than I had wanted and originally planned, but I got there in the end!

Check back soon!

Thanks for the continued support, Jack.

Its taken me 5 years to write a reply.

I’m pleased to say the G5 build is still going strong. I’ve moved house several times since building the machine, a real life saver that Apple designed these machines with the ‘handles’. Unfortunately its taken a little bit of a beating and now has some scuffs here and there, but it remains undented.

The graphics card and processor have change, but the rest is exactly how it was in the last post. The styling and design of these cases still appeals to me to this day, and I’m so glad I made this PC.

If I could change a few things, adding sound insulation would certainly be on the cards. The hard drives used in the original build are still the same I’m using now. They’ve developed a tick and clack sound after the years of service they’ve provided. I think I would also add some sort of dust screen behind the front mesh, as the components are absolutely caked in dust. Tonight was the first time I’ve had the side of since I changed the components in 2017. I think a long overdue service is well in order.

Thank you to those who supported me with this, I really hope your G5 builds came out as well as you had desired.

My next response will be in a few years I imagine. Until then.
