Hi All,

Had a steady build going on 10.10.3 on a Gigabyte motherboard. After putting it to sleep the other day, i entered my password when waking it up, and after about 5 seconds the white wheel spun under the password input. This lasted about 30 seconds, then the screen flashed, and put me back at square one, asking for my password. This now happens every time i power it up, and i cannot get through.

I haven't seen anything like this specifically, but if any of you have, can you lead me to a documented fix? Much appreciated! Let me know if you need any additional info.

I'm also wondering if I accidentally installed 10.10.4 and my drivers are not current - does that sound plausible?

My last post seems to not have any content so I reposted here.

Thank You!

The obvious answer is a wrong pass word was entered and the system rejected it.
Did you not create a password hint when the password was created? Usually that pops up if wrong PW is typed a couple of times or Caps locked.
Did you use Apple Password this time for the system instead of a non-apple and forgot about it?

Use your installer usb drive to boot into the installation and make the necessary repairs to the config.plist.

Thanks for your response cmn699,

I'm nearly positive that the password is correct, and yes I have a password hint set up. Should I not be getting the "shake" motion if the password is incorrect anyhow?

What do you mean by:

"Did you use Apple Password this time for the system instead of a non-apple and forgot about it?"

Thanks!

Thanks esafeddie,

Can you provide a bit more detail around this? How would I go about doing this exactly? (a link or explanation would be awesome thank you) What configs do you think may help here?

Additionally, do you think that a 10.10.4 update could have anything to do with this? Or do you think it would be something else.

Thanks!

EDIT: Also wanted to ask, will boot flags maybe help? Is the fact that I can get into the login screen any indicator that a boot flag will not be a viable troubleshooting option, or should that be considered?

During System Setup one can either use Apple Login name and password or create a separate password, Right?

If you have used the Apple password to create the account but later typed your password for non-apple account , password would be rejected. But if you have made a password hint, this is not relevant. It is only for those who have left the 'optional' password hint box empty, it is important. Yeah, the visual effect of a wrong password is another way to notify us that something is wrong with the typed characters.

Did you figure out why this happened? Could you solve it? Are you going for a reinstall?

Haven't solved it - still hoping that boot flags will help - haven't been able to tend to my beloved machine enough the past few days.

Have you had to reinstall due to issues like this? I'm wondering when to cut my losses - I'd rather not go through that but may have to. I was using Time Machine to back up the system, but I'm wondering if I restore using one of those backups from a fresh install, if I'll just get myself into the same trouble. Any thoughts?

I hate screen lock passwords...

However there are any number of ways that pass words get entered wrong and then give issues. The most common is that the Caps Lock gets turned on by mistake when setting the password.

Here is a link for resetting passwords on Apple machines: http://coolestguidesontheplanet.com/reset-forgotten-admin-password-mac-osx/

Not sure if you have a Recovery partition or not or if you can use this tip on a hack.

And it maybe possible for you to use your Yosemite installer USB, boot into the second installer screen, go to the top menu bar, Utilities and open the Terminal app and try entering "resetpassword" and then follow the prompts.

Good modding,
neil
