I am using an old Dell Optiplex 755 to make my first hackintosh.
The specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM 2 dimms
Dell Optiplex 755 DT motherboard

I am not able to reach Chimera when my hard drive is connected. It gets stuck at a screen displaying "\". Without the hard drive installed, I was able to reach the installer. Now I have to enter -v -x npci=0x2000 cpus=1 dart=0 PCIRoodUID=1 and GraphicsEnabler=No to reach Yosemite. Adding the hard drive in makes it not work again, and I obviously can't install OS X to the hard drive when the cable isn't connected.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

More information:

Also, the hard drive is still functional. If I switch to booting from the hard drive, I can boot into Windows XP.

Are you trying to install OSX YOS on a partition on the same HDD with Windows XP?

After disconnecting the Windows XP , HDD from the system , connect a blank SATA HDD and try to boot with your Yosemite Installer using the boot flags that have helped you in your trials, and see if you can install Yosemite on that blank SATA HDD .

Windows XP with a totally different Bootloader[NTLDR] might be blocking the Installer to reach the installation screen

Sorry for the late reply, cmn699. I didn't want to use Windows XP, so I erased the hard drive and that solved the problem. Thanks for your help!

New problem: OS X won't recognize the hard drive. It doesn't appear on the installation screen, Disk Utility, or System Information. It was recognized by the BIOS, though. I looked around the forum but didn't see anything that applied to my situation. Any suggestions?

Set SATA Mode as AHCI on BIOS. Then try to install OS X.

I already had set it to RAID/AHCI mode, but I don't know if any other settings would fix it. Also, during boot, it displays "performing automatic IDE mode" even though it is set to AHCI. That probably has something to do with it, but I don't know how to prevent that.

Otherthan RAID/AHCI, what are the remaining options there??

The other options are RAID/ATA, Legacy, and RAID On. Thanks!

I switched to Legacy, but the hard drive didn't appear in the operating system. Thanks for helping me--do you have any other suggestions?
