I'm getting ready to upgrade and existing windows 7 partition on my SSD to windows 8.1. I use OSX 10.6.8 as my primary OS, just dual boot with windows for windows specific apps.

Any tips to make the process go smooth? It looks like most of the guides are written for new installs, but what i want to do is install windows 8.1 over the existing windows 7 installation. Don't care about saving any data from the windows partition, but also REALLY don't want to risk any data from my OSX partition.

You don't say but from description you have OS X and Win7 on same SSD?

Boot the Win8.1 installer and select upgrade instead of install and select your Win7 partition. You will need iBoot to boot to SL so you can re-install Chimera.

I would encourage you to take the opportunity to get another SSD for Win8.1. That way you can do a clean install and see if you like the metro interface before you destroy the Win7 install. If you don't like Win8 then you still have Win7 without having to re-install it.
