Lion
Mac OS X v10.7 "Lion" was announced October 20, 2010 at Apple's "Back to the Mac" event. Released on July 20th, 2011, Lion will take elements of Apple's iOS features on the iPad such as multi-touch gestures, full-screen applications and a Mac App Store. New features also include a Launchpad (similar to the home screen of iOS devices) and Mission Control, unifying Exposé, Spaces, Dashboard, and full-screen applications within a single interface.[1]
Retail Availability
Unlike previous versions of OS X, which were released on a set of CD-ROMs or a DVD-ROM, Lion was only made available as a download from the Mac App Store for US$29.99 on day one. According to Apple, a USB drive with Lion will be made available at a later date for $69.99. Currently, access to an installation of OS X Snow Leopard is crucial in order to purchase Lion through the Mac App Store.[2]

Installation Method
UniBeast + MultiBeast
The easiest method to install Lion is to create a bootable USB drive using your Mac App Store purchased copy of "Install Mac OS X Lion" or your Apple Store purchased OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive. This all-in-one bootable USB drive can also be used as a rescue boot drive for system recovery. Information on this method can be found on the blog here
UniBeast + MultiBeast is the easiest method to do a clean install of Mac OS X Lion or update any Snow Leopard system. The following guide requires no coding, terminal work, or Mac experience of any kind. here
xMove + MultiBeast
Another installation method in the Tonymacx86 Forum is the xMove + MultiBeast method, which uses a Lion app purchased from the Mac App Store or Retail USB Thumb Drive. Information on this method can be found on the blog here.
Updates
Snow Leopard
The current version of OS X is Snow Leopard (10.6), the preferred version to be installed on a hackintosh using the iBoot + MultiBeast Method. The most recent released build is version 10.6.8.
Retail Availability
A purchased copy of Snow Leopard was made available by disc. Two versions of this retail disc exist, 10.6.0 and 10.6.3. Only retail versions of the disc will work with the iBoot + MultiBeast Method. Gray backup discs that come with Macs are incompatible with the method. The retail version sells for $29 from the Apple Store. See the photo above for what a Retail disc looks like. Purchase one today to get started with your build!
System Requirements
According to Apple, the following requirements must be met to install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard[3]:
- Intel processor
- 1GB of memory
- 5GB of available disk space (drive or partition that is less than 1TB)
- DVD drive for installation
OS X does not support Intel or JMicron Hardware RAID at this time, but Apple's software RAID has been used with success.
Updates
Builders are advised to read community literature frequently and thoroughly before performing an update. Many members test updates and post their findings for each update release. There are two common ways to update a standard OSX Installation:
- Software Update: The built in Software Update app updates your installation from the current version to the newest release.
- Combo Updates: Separate installer downloads that can be found on Apple's website, and the links below. They enable users to update forward more than one version at a time, and make changes before restarting.
Information about each update can be found in the tables below.
Starting with Mac OS X 10.6.3, Apple modified the AppleHDA Driver to remove support for some Realtek ALC88x codecs. This means that every hackintosh builder using a motherboard with Realtek ALC88x Audio Chipsets MUST enable their audio chipset separately, after using MultiBeast. See HDA Driver.

Many users did not have trouble updating from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5. If audio is causing a problem, run MultiBeast to rollback the HDA Driver, and rebuild the cache using System Utilities.

Many users did not have trouble updating from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6. Fermi drivers may disappear, if so reinstall the NVIDIA Update. If audio is causing a problem, run MultiBeast to rollback the HDA Driver, and rebuild the cache using System Utilities. The Combo Updater will give you all the 10.6.5 kexts, while 10.6.6 through Software Update (~100mb) doesn't really replace much besides adding App Store and related security fixes. The best thing to do would be to use Software Update on supported systems.[4]
