Comments:
This is my first Hackintosh build so I aimed at using parts that are known to be compatible. There is no chance that I would have been able to put together this build without having access to this forum and tonymacx86 great guides!
I'm very interested in the upcoming Windows 8 but at the same time I'm to heavily invested in Apple software to give it up and the Mrs. is using Mac at work. I have previously tried to run boot camp on a Mac but have found the performance running Windows being extremely poor, thus a high end Hackintosh seemed like a great idea!
The system will mostly be used for photo and video editing tasks with adobe products (i.e., CS6 Ext and Lightroom). I think the system might be a bit over kill for the tasks at hand but at the same time I wanted to have a system that was relatively "future proof" (Is that even possible nowadays??)
The idea is to run a dual boot system with OS X on one of the Vertex ssd (installed) and Win 7/8 on the the other (not installed). I'm using the Seagate hd for storage, I'm not going to set up any kind of Raid config. since I'm using a NAS (with cloud back up) for most of my storage.
In hindsight I would have chosen a low profile memory such as the: Corsair 16 GB Vengeance Blue Low Profile instead of the ones I bought. The reason for this being the ability to use a proper air cooler for the CPU (which isn't possible due to fitting issues if you are using high profile memories in all the 4 memory slots on the mobo). The liquid cooling system from Antec that I bought is working great but feels a bit too much for my purposes. I have switched the fan in the Antec system to a Noctua in order to make it run a bit more quiet, the fan is working in an intake push configuration. Edit: Added one extra Noctua now working in an intake push/pull configuration.
Installation
I followed the guides from Tonymacx86:
- UniBeast: Install OS X Mountain Lion on Any Supported Intel-based PC
- Lion Installation Guide for Ivy Bridge CPUs
- Lion Installation Guide for Ivy Bridge CPUs
Installation process
Fairly straight forward, had to boot the Unibeast USB with the PCIRootUID=0 command, not sure why since I have a Gigabyte mobo but unless I did that I ran into a black screen when booting the Unibeast (version 1.52) USB.
Post Installation process
I ran about the same choices in MultiBeast as in Tonymacx86 template (I don't have a screen grab of my own Multibeast setup yet but se below picture for default OS X Lion template). However ticked under the Audio section I ticked the ALC898 instead of ALC887/888b, I also ticked ALC898 in HDA rollback and ALC898 injection.
Important note GPU: When I ticked the 10.7.2+ Combo OpenCL Enabler under NVIDIA support the GPU stoped working. I couldn't boot any longer, got pass Chimera but got the dreaded "you have to restart your computer...." (or something like that) when trying to boot into OS X. Conclusion: Don't tick the NVIDIA support if you have the same GPU as me.
I then proceeded by installing Chimera 1.11.0 and tested the on board GPU, worked fine.
Edit: Reinstalled, now using MultiBeast 5.0.2 for post processing. After installation now boot into ML with PCIRootUID=0 command.
Choices made in Unibeast (below picture is not entirely correct, made som changes...):
- USERDSDT
- Audio / Without DSDT / ALC898
- Graphics / Nvidia GTX 470 / 480 / 560Ti 448 Cores / 570 / 580 Support
- Miscellaneous / FakeSMC
- Miscellaneous / FakeSMC Plugins / Motherboard Plugin
- Miscellaneous / FakeSMC Plugins / HWMonitor
- Network / hnak's AppleIntelE1000e Ethernert
- Network / Realtek Gigabit Ethernet
- Chimera
- System definition: iMac 12.2 (seem to have better software compability than Mac Pro 3.1, DVDFab for an example)
- After some testing: Nothing ticked amongst the Disc options (Neither IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector or TRIM enabler)
MultiBeast Configuration for OSX Mountain Lion
Geekbench, no OC
Geekbench, Turbo Ratio limit set @ x45 (1.175v)
Black Magic Design Disk Speed Test
Cinebench

Black Magic Design Disk Speed Test
Cinebench
Not tested (but soon to be...):
- Overclocking Have now tested a very basic OC, turning the turbo ratio limit up to x45 @ 1.175 voltage. Geekbench up from mid 14000 to about 16850..
- FireWire Confirmed working
- USB 3 (USB ports are working but not sure if it's 3.0 or 2.0)
- Still more tests to be done on sleep mode and wake on LAN Issues with Auto Sleep, no problem putting computer to sleep manually
- Benchmarks
- and probably alot lot more that just doesn't spring to mind just now.......

Issues:
- Audio, havn't had the time to test i thoroughly but at first glance there are issues,
can't find any output or input sources in settings.. I now have output through the orange audio port, used attached AppleHDA.kext (for which I claim no credit, found it elsewere in the forum but havn't been able to locate the original author.) No major audio problem after Multibeast 5.0.2 config.
- Boot time, not impressive. Both my MB pro and MB air boots way faster.
System now boots in 10 seconds from Chimera screen, for some reason I had missed to enable xHCI and EHCI Hand-off.- Boot time, not impressive. Both my MB pro and MB air boots way faster.
- System having issues entering auto sleep, no problem putting it into sleep mode manually though. Solved with lots of help from other threads in this forum: Need to change "darkwake=0" in org.Chameleon.Boot.plist to "darkwake=no" in order to get auto sleep to work. Still had issues with USB unresponsiveness after wake (Not on standard clocks but with a 4.5ghz oc) but when i disabled PLL voltage control in the BIOS that problem was solved as well. However I think if you are looking at a massive oc (5ghz+) you will need to have PLL voltage control set on auto and just live with the unresponsiveness (for a limited time, roughly 30 seconds after wake).
- Ethernet working great but only through one of the ports (left one)
I will continue to update and edit this post along the way, but initial impressions are great even though there are a few bumps that needs to be straighten out.Edit 1: Audio working
Edit 2: Slow boot time solved, basic OC tested. Geekbench pictures attached.
Edit 3: Added Disk Speed Test results
Edit 4: Added Cinebench screenshot, confirmed Syba firewire card working oob, system having issues entering auto sleep, Ethernet issues (right port), additional Noctua fan added for push/pull config and last but not least finally got the system dual booting OSX 10.8 and WIN 8 from Chimera
Edit 5: Multibeast 5.0.2 Configuration, Ethernet issue solved, No need for an extra Kext in order to get audio working.
Edit 6: Problem with ASUS bt-adapter, ordered a Rocketfish Instead. Also added an extra DVD-RW to the list
Edit 7: Finally got auto sleep to work without any USB unresponsiveness.
