Comments

This build was essentially given to me in components by a co-worker, and was pieced together along with several spare parts I had lying around from previous tear-downs and numerous Craigslist purchases. The motherboard, processor, RAM, and case were all my co-worker's old PC before he upgraded last year, and they were "taking up space under his bed" so I told him I would put them to use. The monitors were grabbed as a pair off of Craigslist for about $60, and the graphics card was taken from my original hack, which is now relying on integrated HD4000 graphics, since that's about all it needs for the use it gets.

This build is a secondary workstation for me. My primary sits at my desk at home (the X99 build) but this one will sit at work, so I can stop using the Pentium 4 piece of garbage that's at my desk now. :D

Installation Notes
To be quite honest, this had to be one of the most straightforward installations I have ever performed. Once BIOS settings were optimized (see below), the UniBeast Installer booted right up with just "npci=0x2000" as a flag. Installation was very easy, just follow The Guide. Be sure to add in the "npci=0x2000" flag at each boot, as it is required for this platform.

BIOS Settings
With this board, only a few changes needed to be made. However, my BIOS had been updated regularly by the previous user. Make sure you are running the latest BIOS for maximum compatibility.

First, load optimized defaults on the board. (Optional) Disable the Asus ExpressGate for a faster boot. Next, set BOTH SATA controllers to AHCI (the Marvell ports and the Intel ports are under different headers, make sure both are in AHCI mode or your drives will not show up in OS X). VT-d is disabled by default, but double check that it is in fact disabled.

In this build, I did not overclock my CPU or RAM (yet) even though the RAM can run at 1600 MHz. By default, the board clocks it down to 1069 MHz, which is fine for me.

NOTE: Be sure to change your sleep states to S3 ONLY or sleep/wake will not work properly.

MultiBeast Settings

Next, edit your org.chameleon.Boot.plist and be sure you add in "npci=0x2000" under the "Boot Flags" header. Also please note that your graphics settings may be different if not using the same graphics card. The GeForce GTX 650 in this built works with the default "GraphicsEnabler=No" as this platform does not have integrated graphics.

A Note: I ran MultiBeast WITHOUT a DSDT on this board. From what I can tell, everything runs well without the DSDT at the moment, though I may extract and patch my own later. IF not using a DSDT, you will need to use a KEXT based HDAEnabler. You can either add that directly in your MultiBeast settings (not pictured) or install manually (available through Toleda's github.)

The Marvell Ethernet Controller which governs both Ethernet ports under OS X does not have a kext built in to MultiBeast. The kext must be applied manually, and I have attached it to this post in the form of a complete IONetworkingFamily.kext.

The 500GB Western Digital drives that I am using in the tower are older model drives, so only 512 block sectors. 4K sector boot fix not required in this instance, but should you receive a "boot0" error, see here: boot0 Error: The Official Guide.

Benchmarks

Single Core performance seems to be less than adequate, though Multi Core is about on par with what I was expecting. SSDTs are not designed to power manage Bloomfield processors, so the bootloader is handling P/C States for the processor. I have a day off work today, so I'll be investigating.

Any success with 10.10.5? Want to update but afraid about audio)

This system has been retired to Windows only. However, my second X58 system uses the same hardware. It is currently running 10.10.5 (booting via legacy Clover instead of via Chimera as described in this guide) and has had hardware upgrades. I am in the process of upgrading the system to El Capitan and will post a guide once the upgrades are complete.
