Comments

  • So it has been a bit since be building and posting, but I have changes my systems up a bit and mixed and matched and got some new bits for the old bits. I have been running Mavericks for a while now and decided it was time to get everything updated. That was for both OS' on my system. I bumped up to Yosemite and Windows 8.1 Pro respectively.

  • I have been using this set up for a bit but with a GTX670 and only the 240GB SSD which housed the OSX of my set up. I have been running dual boot set up but the Windows 7 side was on a 1TB spinner. I decided with this I would update the Win drive to a SSD and now bust the GPU to a 970. There are some current and up and coming games I want to tackle on the Windows side and the 970 should handle this all lovely.

Installation Notes
  • This installation wasn't all that hard to get done. The motherboard set up was about a natural for running OS X and really two things to set up for OS X installation.
  • One thing to remember if you are dual booting it to install each OS with no other drives plugged into the system. It is always best to install OSX and Windows on SEPARATE drives. This is to keep from losing your mind if you have a catastrophic issue with a drive you don't lose everything at once. As always also back up your stuff in whatever way is easiest for you. Plus installing on separate drives is easier, especially with Windows 8,1.
  • If you install Windows 8,1 you will have to make sure you put the port that the drive Widows will be installed onto is set a "Legacy" and NOT UEFI as Chimera will not see the bootable drive.
  • Win 8,1 Guide - http://www.tonymacx86.com/multi-booting/96000-guide-dual-booting-mountain-lion-windows-8-a.html

UEFI Set up/Bios
  • At start up press and hold the "Delete" key on the keyboard.
  • In M.I.T. Set Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) to Profile 1, then go over to Peripherals and set SATA Mode Selection to AHCI.
  • Save and Exit.
  • That's really it for the BIOS and installing OSX. Make sure no other drives are plugged in except for the one you want to install OSX on.

  • So with the UniBeast drive plugged in you will come to the boot screen and you will need to type nv_disable=1 -v -x
  • Your going to need to type nv_disable=1 throughout this process several times until OSX is installed and you can download the nVidia drivers for the card to work in OSX.
  • This is what I set up with MultiBeast after installation was all set up.

  • Remember we are still using nv_disable=1 to load after every restart.
  • Now we will take care of that by downloading the drivers needed.
  • Follow the directions for the install on this, it is straight forward.
  • Remember you are still using nv_disable=1 for your restarts!
  • Make sure in System reports your card shows up

  • After you will get this Icon at your top toolbar
Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 9.39.32 PM.png
  • Just choose that NVIDIA Web Driver
  • Restart and you should be all good. (If not, use the boot flag nvda_drv=1 as described here)
  • If you were installing with the GPU set as Display out then enjoy!
  • If you were not then your going to have to go into Bios and set Internal Display Output from IGFX to PCIe 1 Slot.
  • Then disable Intel Processor Graphic.
  • Save and Exit.
  • If running dual boot and you followed the guide linked above just make sure your boot priority is set on the OSX drive and then Win drive there after.

Continuation

So Thanks all for checking out my build and I hope it can help somebody out with same hardware as I :)
Also the game I am going to but the works on the GTX 970 is Elite:Dangerous.

Thanks,
This case is awesome. Has its own hotswap bays and of course you can take the top and sides off of it to test out new stuff or replace old stuff.
Keeps things cool as well with all the space in it.

So far the 970 is working great.
I haven't had any issues and been gaming the poop out of in in Windows. OS X runs it fine as well and plays WoW with no issues :)

So thus far I have no regrets getting that card.

I want to upgrade my hackintosh from a 650ti to a 970... I actually just bought it.

I want to follow your guide here...

However the only difference between our machines is I have a
GA-Z77X-UP5-TH

Think it'll matter?
