Why I decided to build this system

I have a MacPro 1,1 (2006). A good workhorse, but felt like it needed a replacement. It had 4 internal disks (2 for RAID 1, one for TimeMachine and one for bootcamp). Going for a iMac / laptop was not an option. I waited to see what Apple would come up with for the "next gen" Mac Pro. As beautiful as the machine is, I did not see an easy migration path that did not require me to buy overpriced disk enclosures on top of the machine itself that proved how enslaved I was to this system. I had this rig so I could upgrade / scale / migrate easily. Apple was no longer playing along. So here I am.

OS(s)
This build is setup to multi-boot with Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10.1) / Windows Vista (it's ok to laugh)

Everyone should know

Installation Notes
  • I did a ton of reading ahead of time. Installation was that much easier afterwards.
  • This case has a FireWire port in the front, while the motherboard has no connector for it.
  • This case has one SS USB 3.0 in the front, simply a pass-trough wire. I don't have a connector for the motherboard.
  • I read the Yosemite install guide: http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-...-x-yosemite-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html
  • All OSes are on the SSD drive. Instructions from RehabMan's blog post were crucial. (See his profile for the blog URL). I used "Parted Magic" to carry it out.
  • See also in Forum->Installation->Other Operating Systems->Multi Booting. You will find there a sticky post that is a guide. This guide points to an external site with instructions to put users data on a different drive than you OS drive.
  • I used UniBeast 5.0.2 and MultiBeast 7.1.1
  • I used Mac Pro 3.1 as a system definition to avoid black screen I got after using 6.1. Also removed 'GenericUSBXCI.kext'. (both steps, as per post #5 here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-...z97x-ud7-th-yosemite-installation-freeze.html)
  • The boot time remains long because of thunderbolt until you apply this fix: http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/128748-fix-slow-boot-thunderbolt-2-0-motherboards.html
  • Never had to boot with -x or -v (or any other boot flags)
  • I don't have any thunderbolt peripherals so I can't really test much about those right now.
  • Was under the impression I had no sound, until I plugged my wire in the black jack (instead of the green one)
  • I don't use iMessage. Not on this machine or any other machine. Period.
  • I did not try handoff.

Wishlist
*I don't know if any of this is plug-n-play or simply could not work with this build, but I would be willing to try*

Almost perfect...
Still working to iron out a few kinks:

Change Log
  • 2015-01-12: Installation notes - additionnal note for the removal of GenericUSBXCI.kext

Bobino's First build

Good build and well written-up. Looks like a very powerful machine

Your few problems are the ones that really annoy - I know.

There is a USB 20-pin to 9/10-pin x2 adaptor available for your front USB ports. I had one for free with an older Lian-Li case but you can find many different types on Ebay for little cost.

I've checked myself and you will need either to build your own wifi/BT card for Handoff compatibility (There's a thread here on Tonymacx86) or you can buy them ready-built from China.

The DVD eject is another mentioned many times here. I just installed the eject button to my menu bar until I got it sorted. Check if OS X is reporting the DVD drive as internal or eternal. There's a kext to fix it. If you install it properly with the Kext Dev Mode tick-box workaround mentioned here :

http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-...-x-yosemite-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html

See Step #4, No 9

it should be OK. I've installed 3rd party kexts.

Nice build- it's alot like the Z87X-UD7-TH + i7-4770K + GTX 770 build that I use for my main rig. And welcome to the forum!

Used Mac Pro 3.1 as a system definition bad idea.
At that time there was no CPU i7-4790K. Use iMac 14,2. This is true.

Very impressive...my congratulations.

I have very similar build:GA-Z87X-UD7 TH, Core i7-4770K, 16 GB A-DATA DDR31600, Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB, Samsung SH-S203N DVD Burner, Broadcom USB bluetooth, Corsair White Graphite Series 600T case, Apple LED 27" Cinema Display, 10.10.1 Yosemite.

I had had the same way of Yosemite installation as you had and I have the same memory 51 error every time I boot the system, but I stopped worrying about it. I also fixed system frizzing by removing GenericUSBXCI.kext and changing System Definition from MacPro3,1 to iMac14,2.
My system startup time is 34 seconds (from pressing Power button to the fully functional system) and I don't have any problem with DVD burner ejecting, though I have a different burner.

The USB 3.0 problem is easy to fix; you have 1 x USB 3.0/2.0 20-pin header (just next to the DDR3_1 slot). You need a "20-Pin Header to 2 x USB 3.0 Female Adapter Cable". You can buy it at Dealextreme (DX) dot com for $4.67, or any comp hardware store.

What is your rig Geekbench 3 score? Mine 64-bit Multi-Core score is 15700.

my best regards,
yurid

Hi bobbing, you can post your chameleon.Boot.plist?
And youse nvidia we bdriver?
Thanks.

Any chance you could post your multibeast settings? I have the same build going on and am having a heck of a time getting audio to work. Thanks

...I also fixed system frizzing by removing GenericUSBXCI.kext ...

Are you still able to make generic USB2 equipment work on USB3 ports after you removed GenericUSBXCI.kext? Like a scanner, usb hub, card reader etc?

hi i've the same config any idea how to fix step by step the usb 3.0 under el capitan?
