I was eager to update from my old build: glitchy BIOS, couldn't get the correct DSDT, Ethernet failing when awake, noisy and slow boot times. When some money fell into my hands I decided I´d buy the SSDs as they were in discount, I wanted to update later this year the rest of the machine. And then I saw THE case and I was like "what the hell, CHARGE!" (and I'm still suffering from buying remorse).

The reason I choose a Z97X over a Z87X system was because *maybe* I'll update the CPU (or maybe not and was a waste of energy to get it working) and my choices cost almost the same.

To get it working was a hard.

Copied my OS X installation from my old HDD to one of the new SSDs and removed the kexts required by my old build and the DSDT file. Booted the machine, enter to BIOS, loaded optimized defaults, set RAM Profile to XMP 1, disable VT-d, shut down. Then I mounted the SSD in the new machine and booted normally but verbose: kernel panic! Second try: in secure mode (-x), OS X warned my that I was using the incorrect RAM slots and I should change the sticks to the correct sockets. I shut down the machine, moved the DIMMs to the correct sockets and booted again in secure mode, installed the correct kexts via MultiBeast and reboot normally verbose.

Here the nightmare started, every time I restarted the machine a different error would appear, I even updated the BIOS but it wash't enough. It was already late so I went to bed hoping for better luck next day.

And I had it!

I decided to reinstall using UniBeast (which I didn't want to do, to no stress the SSD drive), the installation went without problems. The first boot was the one I had issues with. Again kernel panic after kernel panic, after I remembered I've read a post by Stork about a Z97 board. So I went into the BIOS and deactivated the IGFX (on-board graphics)... SUCCESS (almost).

So, summary for install:
  1. Load defaults
  2. Set RAM Profile to XMP 1
  3. Disable VT-d
  4. Disable IGPU

What works:
  • Sleep!
  • Ethernet (with kext)

What doesn't works:
  • The IGPU.
  • The green jack outputs noise instead of sound. The other two jacks worked correctly, current workaround select another output as default output.
  • iMessage

What I haven't tested:
  • USB3 ports
  • FaceTime

ToDo
  • Install Windows 8.1 on the other SSD (I want this for gaming)
  • Fix the green jack
  • Try the Stork post to check if I can enable the IGFX (on-board graphics)

Update July 26th:
  • Installed Windows 8.1, zero problems.
  • IGP fixed using this kext.

Update August 8th:
  • Green jack fixed with the latest Multibeast (6.4.1)

Hi Vraiment,

I've got quit the same config as you (same mobo) and could also get Mavericks to be installed, no flags needed.
However after installing last Multibeast (and there I also tried your setup, thanks for that) Mavericks wont boot anymore and stays on the Apple logo screen. (haven't tried different boot flags yet)

Have you made it through with MultiBeast man?
Cheers

Sorry for the late answer. If you boot with verbose mode what is the last thing that shows? Have you tried to disable the IGPU?

Thanks for your answer :) I finally succeed with my "Hack pro" and the configuration you can see on my profile. I just had to change some of your MultiBeast settings to make it work fine.

I am pretty glad since this wasn't made with the most recommended hardware for a first build, mostly the graphic card. However some things are still missing like the sound (but I haven't tried the HDAEnabler flag yet) and the CUDA drivers gives a Kernel panic.
Too bad because I'd need this to optimize some video motion works, but I hope to find how it can work for me the way it works for many others.

Thanks again for your help. :)

Hey guys,

I'm trying to get i7 4790K (not overclocked) with GA-Z97X-SLI to boot and can't.

I've been able to do an install via Clover Guide, but cannot boot to desktop afterward. Tried all the bootflags.

In Bios:
I've Load defaults
NO OPTION for - Set RAM Profile to XMP 1
I've Disabled VT-d
I've Disabled IGPU

UniBeast wouldn't even boot.

What and I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help!

Hey Taz,

Thanks for the info.

I got it up and installed with the Clover Guide, but then had to boot with Unibeast. Once I installed Multibeast, I pretty much have everything working. When it sleeps for more than 30 minutes, then on wakeup, sometimes the audio doesn't work. Very happy with the result. Thanks guys!

Beautiful setup. Could you please tell me EXACTLY what kext you are using for audio? I've tried the 1150ACL from Multibeast 5 and 6 and also tried VoodooHDA. I got the back green port to work but is incredibly scratchy.

Thanks for your help in advance...

Dan

Hi.
I have the same motherboard. And I have a question. What kexts did you use for sound and network?

Same here, I'm using Z97X-SLI as well. And I'm not sure what setting to use for multibeast...
