I have a friend who does graphic design and he and I had both heard of Hackintoshs. Neither of us had ever built one, but I have built a computer before so I had that going for me.

We pretty much chose the September 2013 build right off the buyer's guide and I'm glad we did. I did a great deal of research both here and on other sites to ensure I set the BIOS up properly.

Things I did:

- Updated BIOS to v F7 and then loaded optimized defaults
- Used XMP memory profile, bumping to 1600MHz
- Disabled Wake on LAN
- Disable Intel virtualization technology
- Enabled EHCI Hand-off

- XHCI Hand-off was already enabled and set xHCI mode from Smart Auto to Auto
- Set CPU fan speed from Normal to full
- Unplugged and also manually disabled all other HDs via the BIOS
- Chose IGFX as first display device

Ran Unibeast installer with no issues and here is what I did in Multibeast

Multibeast 6.0.1 (1)

Chose DSDT free installation with the following defaults:

Drivers - Disk - 3rd Party SATA
Drivers - Misc - Fake SMC v5.3.820
Drivers - System - Apple RTCPatch for CMOS Reset
Bootloaders - Chimera v2.2.1
Boot Options - Basic Boot Options, Generate CPU States, Hibernate Mode - Desktop, Use KernalCache,
System Def - Mac Pro - Mac Pro 3,1

Stuff I did myself:

Audio - ALC898 plus HDAEnabler
Disk - 3rd Party SATA plus 10.9.0 TRIM Patch
Graphics - No additional tweaks
Misc - USB 3.0 Universal by Zenith432
Network - Intel hnak's AppleIntelE1000e v2.4.14
Customize - Only added 1080p Display Mode, left all else the same

My experience is clearly not like everyone else's, because I literally had absolutely zero issues. No boot flags, no hardware problems, etc. The networking worked (both NICs), Wifi worked, sound worked, wake from sleep worked, everything worked. No freezes or crashes. I re-enabled the 1TB SATA drive and partitioned it with no issues. I'm currently only using the DVI as I don't have an HDMI monitor (although I guess I could use a TV) so I may run into HDMI audio issues as I've seen others do. Can I just plug it into any old TV that does 1080P?

Geekbench 32 bit trial mode scored it 3647 Single Core and 14091 Multi-Core. Unigine results were as expected with the HD4600 graphics, averaging about 10.5 frames per second. I'm trying to convince my friend to buck up and buy a nice video card and also a cooler so we can overclock it a bit.

A couple of questions I have:

Should I shy away from updating things like iTunes? Best method to backup current config (or is it just Time Machine)?

Yes, you can plug it into any 1080p HDTV via HDMI, picture quality isn't usually as good as on
a PC monitor. For updating apps like iTunes just do that like you normally would on
any Apple Mac. Shouldn't cause any problems. Very nice build glad it went well.

Thank you - found I had the iMessage issue but was able to resolve it by searching.

One other question that I forgot - is there a good utility to monitor CPU temp and to test all the onboard fans and everything?

EDIT: If I go back to multibeast and install FakeSMC HWMonitor Application, do I also need to recheck all the original options that I chose when I loaded all the other stuff or if I build and install this, will it just add it on?

Select just the Fake SMC and HWMonitor in MB then reboot. Don't reapply all the others.

Done - had to reinstall again with all the plugins too as I was only seeing drive temps but now I'm set. Thank you!

I currently have Mac Pro 3.1 set as my system definition. How can I check to see if I have hardware acceleration working? Is there any risk with switching it to iMac 14.1? I am currently getting a black screen on Mavericks when I try to restart it from sleep so I've had to switch it off anyway. I would love to be able to fix that.

You'll want to run DPCIManager and select the P State menu. Currently, on my Z68MX test system, I get the same P States of 8, 35, 36, 37 no matter what System Definition I choose, including the iMac14,2. That tells me I need to run a SSDT if I want "better" power management. Note that an Apple iMac only has those previously mention P States.

Thanks for the advice but I went to the website and it doesnt have a version for Mavericks and also, I looked through the supported hardware. It doesn't have my motherboard in the list. (Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H)

Should I go ahead and try it anyway?

ok so I took the chance and downloaded the mountain lion version and ran it. Here is the output

I think you are looking for a DSDT which you don't need for a Haswell build. I was referring to a SSDT which you use to control your power management.

Then, don't worry about it. Just enjoy using your hackintosh until you get more knowledgeable about the (optional, IMO) fine tuning you can do to it.

Not sure about tuning. But I would love it if it could get it to return from sleep and not leave the screen black. Do you have any thoughts about what could be causing that? Is it possible that my KVM switch is causing it because I vaguely remember Windows 8 doing the same thing once before I switched to Windows 7 which never does it.
