"Your System has Run out of Application memory"

Anyone else on this list running Mavericks get this alert "Your System has Run out of Application memory"?

After two months of trouble free operation on my new build I am starting to get this message almost every time I use the computer.
I have 8 GB of 1600 ram, i5 cpu and Gigabyte GA-Z87XUD3H.
I use this computer mainly as a HTPC and I use Plex or VLC.

I see that on Apple discussions that I am not alone, but no one seems to have a definitive fix.
Anybody here have any input as to what might be going on?
