My Installation with ASUS P7P55D and ATI HD 4890

Thanks Tony for this and all your guides. I have gotten 10.6.2 working (mostly) on my system with an ASUS P7P55D, i5 750, ATI 4890. Also my processor is overclocked to 4GHz and works splendidly.

Using your ATI Boot CD, I booted the installer using safe mode, and was able to install successfully. In order to get QE/CI working with my 4890, I used the QE/CI Exotic package from netkas, that you can download here.

Just try to install it, and it will need to update some things then restart, and run the package and restart again. Voila! That's it!

The remaining problem is getting audio to work, there seems to be no solution for this motherboard that I can find. I read on insanelymac that some people have had limited success with VoodooHDA and nothing else works. The board has a VIA 1828S chip for the onboard audio.

I hope that helps anyone who might have a similar system to mine. If anyone has any suggestions as to the audio problem, or questions about installing with the 4890 fire away.

The system speed runs fine as far as I can tell. The clock is not going fast or anything. Everything seems to be fine other than sound. I have working ethernet, usb, and firewire that I have tested. I updated the link to a link to the forum post where I found it because for some reason with the % signs and such the link didn't wanna work on it's own.

I'm running 10.6.2 with much of the same hardware. P7P55D, i5, Intel SSD, but nVidia 9600GT.

Regarding sound, I'm successfully using the latest VoodooHDA, but it only works if you boot in 32 bit mode (<string>arch=i386</string>) in the com.apple.boot file.

I'm pretty new in this field, and have only been running this system for a week. The only thing that doesn't run perfect is the ethernet. Sometimes the bonjour messes up between my hackintosh and my ubuntu avahi / netatalk box.

Ok, a few things, 1. have you set up your drives to AHCI 2. is the optical drive SATA and connected to a SATA port that connects to the Intel chipset 3. are you using a retail disc?

I've had problems with several downloaded ISO images that just reboots as soon as the install is meant to start and the CPUS=1 and busratio=20 commands did nothing to help that. I don't have an ATI graphics card, but I've run into several odd problems of which most seemed to be disc related rather than hardware related.

Henrik, thanks for the advice. I put the i386 flag into the com.apple.boot file and installed the newest VoodHDA. It appeared to have installed correctly (I had a volume control and it was showing different inputs and outputs in the system menu), but whenever I boot into OSX I hear a pop sound from the speakers, and I then I don't get any sound. I still won't even get any sound if I reboot back into Windows. The way to get it back is to completely shut down the computer and unplug the computer. I saw someone on a different forum that had the same problem.

@broodofqueen - The problems you are having are most likely related to the ATI 4870 graphics card. I also have a 4870 and I had to go through a lot of extra steps to install Snow Leopard. Fortunately, it *is* possible, and it runs very well now that it's installed. I explain in a little bit more detail in a different topic: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=30

For me, it was the Qoopz kernel that was causing the problem. Using a different kernel on the BootCD may fix this. If I get a chance tonight, I'll try rolling my own BootCD based on my working kernel.

Could someone tell me how do we know if our optical drive is connected to the intel chipset ??

Lifer86: Hmm.. Weird.. I also get the popping sound, and the sound then works. Both the green jack input in the back of the motherboard and the frontpanel is working. I don't know what you can try then.

Just wanted to know if There is something special to consider with the install discussed in this thread if I use a GeForce 8400GS graphic card instead of the ATI 4890 since I want a noiseless card.

By the way is there someone who could give and exact step by step guide in order to have success with the install if possible?
