I am currently running a hackintosh in my studio with an Avid Digi 003 interface using firewire 400. Whenever I open Pro Tools and the firewire communication begins I get noise through my monitors. I am posting an audio sample of the noise. It is already happening at the beginning, then I should down pro tools, announce I am opening pro tools and as I click you can hear it breaks up the audio. This is really driving me nuts because I am trying to focus in on minute details in the audio and i cant with all this noise being so loud. Below is the hardware in using.

ASUS P7P55D-E Pro ATX Intel Motherboard
EVGA GeForce 9500 GT 01G-P3-N959-TR Video Card
Intel Core i7-860 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
With a vanilla install of 10.6.3 updated to 10.6.4 using Multibeast.
(I followed the guide on lifehacker)

I have read other forum posts on here with similar issue but most people were saying the noise was coming from the computer itself, and mine is coming through my monitors. If I cant find a solution through my current hardware I will try to purchase an external firewire card but I would rather save myself the $30 if I don't need it.

Thank you in advance

Hmm, that's not a good noise, try disconnecting all your USB devices, when I have my Line 6 POD XT Live on I get funny noises coming through my monitors. Also check that the 003 is the digital clock master. My 003 doesn't make that noise. Also check it with a different software, you can download Reaper for nothing just to check if it's a Pro Tools issue or not. What version of Pro Tools are you using? Is the noise present in your recording or just coming through the monitors? Has it always been this way or has something changed in your setup? I'll think about it a bit more and I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind.

It's EMI/RF Interference. Some things to try:

1. Try some Ferrite Beads on your cables.
2. Reroute your wires, clean up wiring, keep audio wires far away from your digital lines.
3. Try a different FW port (i.e. external PCI FW card).
4. Try a different audio interface.

Well for the longest time I was using pro tools 8 and had ADAM A7 monitors, and all this came about when i did 2 upgrades at once. I switched to Pro Tools 9 and bought new Yamaha HS80Ms.

I have the monitors plugged into a furman rack conditioner and then into a UPS, and have my computer plugged into a separate furman rack conditioner and another UPS, going into different outlets in the room.

I found the issue goes away if i unplug the firewire from my hackintosh and plug it into my macbook pro using all the existing wires and set up, so it has to be something with my computer.

I ordered a PCI-E firewire card off amazon for $30 but i was hoping to go the cheaper route of just fixing this internally. Ill post again when it gets here and see where im at

Yeah, the Furman conditioner will not help (power conditioners are a scam anyway). It is caused by EMI/RF interference, you can try the Ferrite beads IF (big IF) the noise is only appearing on your monitors (and not the audio tracks recorded).

I'm using the Syba FW interface with my MOTU 828mk2 and I don't have EMI/RF interference caused by firewire.

Maybe computer power supply?

got a new firewire pci-e card off amazon and OSX reads it no problem but i am still getting the noise through my monitors.

Is the noise also being recorded? (i.e. present on both monitors and audio tracks)... or just monitors only?

IF MONITORS ONLY:
Does the ADAM have this problem? or just the HS80?

IF BOTH MONITORS and AUDIO TRACKS:
Can you check the interface on another computer/laptop?

the noise is not being recorded. it appears as I open pro tools and the 1394 light on my DIGI illuminates. then as i click around my hard drive and open files, is what you hear in the audio sample.

when i connect my 15.4" macbook pro unibody, all noise goes away, using the exact same configuration with exception of the firewire cable (my MBP only has firewire 800, the hackintosh is firewire 400).

i sold the ADAMs so I cant test them to see if it an issue with the yamahas, but it goes away with my laptop so it cant be....right?!

This is starting to get me running in circles

It's good that it's not being recorded... so we know the problem is "external"..

Do you have another FW400 cable? Maybe the shielding on that FW400 cable isn't good, and the HS80 is picking up the interference (i.e. digital signal travelling on that cable) and you're hearing it on the speaker monitors (kinda like same effect placing a cell phone near your monitor).
