Problem is Broadcom 57781 chip is not natively supported in OS X. Try this kext and see if it will work - it worked in Lion.

I have a Dell XPS 8700 with a Realtek 8111E Ethernet Controller. I too have installed Snow Leopard and upgraded to 10.6.8. I cannot get the Ethernet working either so that I can download the Mavericks update. I have tried the Kext in Multibeast for SL. It causes an installation wizard to come up to install the driver. I do this, reboot, but I cannot create a network.

I also downloaded a more recent versions of the Kext and that didn't work. I even extracted the Kext from Multibeast for Mavericks and that didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

Tried the Linx2mac realtek driver? http://lnx2mac.blogspot.com/p/realtekrtl81xx-osx-driver.html

Yeah I tried it. The weird thing is, nothing happens after I add the Kext and reboot. When using Multibeast and choosing that driver (albeit an earlier version) I get an installation wizard for the driver. It installs, but still can't add an Ethernet connection.

Did you repair permissions and rebuild the caches? If not, repair permissions with disk utility, then boot with -f and see if that works.

I did repair permissions and caches. I did not however boot with -f. I can try that.

You are going to need to know the chip number as HEMI posted ... as their are so may variations of the hardware and these kexts are tailored for specific ones. Some support multiple hardware numbers but not all.

You may need to boot windows or a run time linux CD to get that chip #.

Once you have that chip # then search w google for it and kext.

Also when you install a single kext no matter how its extracted etc.
You should use a program like Kext Install which is available in downloads.

Also you should see the KEXTs section of the DOWNLOADS.
As they maybe a kext you can use.

REaltech RTL81xx

If all this fails then use a standalone netwrork card Intel and disable the onboard port in the bios.

I appreciate the support!!! I've already tried to use the kexts that Going Bald posted...they didn't seem to work=/...I'm NOW trying to rebuild the caches and boot with -f...but I'm not entirely sure how to do that=/...if THAT doesn't work though...a standalone network card like a wifi USB adapter would work totenkopf 4?!

I would not use a wifi card at this time as the amount of working WIFI cards that support SL are like chickens teeth nowadays if you know what I mean.

Using a wired card is the best method and connecting to the router w a network cord or line to get the internet to load would be better.

to rebuild the caches w the -f all you need to do is use it as w other boot switches -
see these links for some explanations.
If you are unfamiliar w the internal workings of the Mackintosh world, I found the following websites and videos very be helpful.

But before you do this please look for some YOUtube vids under the name deanwrayUK
