Hi everyone,

I'm New to the forums and pretty new to OS X. I hope I'm posting in the correct forum.

I'm looking to install Snow Leopard 10.6.7 then update to 10.6.8 and then to Mavericks. My system is an Asus Sabertooth x79 motherboard and a i7 3930K processor. That processor is actually a Sandy Bridge-E processor, but it is a LGA2011 socket.

I was reading this guide http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/iboot-multibeast-install-mac-os-x-on.html

It says to use the following special instructions if I have a Sandy Bridge system:

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/07/get-ready-for-os-x-lion-update-to-1068.html.

These instructions deal with a Socket 1155 Sandy Bridge system. My system is a Socket LGA2011 Sandy Bridge. Should I still follow those special instructions or just ignore them?

Thanks,
Chris

Not sure if it is needed on a socket 2011 or not. It was made to allow 1155 socket SB systems to update to 10.6.8 without KP. I would say that with a SB-E CPU, go ahead and run it. All it does is remove a file that is replaced with the 10.6.8 update installation anyway.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot

Installing snow leo on 2011 hardware is a bit ruff but should be ok - do only use the network port of the motherboard and connect w that.

What you want to do is to get Mavericks downloaded and make the USB...

YOU should install the base OSX Snow Leo...which Apple is selling as 10.6.3
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

then install the 10.6.8 combo update -version 1.1 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
note you can install 10.6.7 first. And see if you can connect to Apple for the download. Not sure if this still works - Apple store option was available starting in 10.6.6 .... if you cant then update to 10.6.8 combo

once their then you need to install this before you make your USB drive w UniBeast.

Thanks for the reply Totenkpf4,

That is exactly what I was going to do.

I have a question that I didn't see addressed however when reading all the tutorials. I know we have to make changes to the BIOS to get the install working. Once everything is up and running, can we put the BIOS changes back to the original settings or do we have to leave them?

Most UEFI BIOSes on modern boards do not require any changes except to use "Optimum Defaults" and make sure the SATA port mode is AHCI. Since your board has no internal graphics and you have a K CPU, VT-d is not an issue. If you do have to make a change in order to install, then leave that change in the BIOS. Once instaled and running, you can make further "tweaks" in the memory and CPUs settings to improve speed/performance.

that video card will have issues w Snow Leo...

the last nVidia card for SL was the GTX260 280 series.

So you will need to use the dedicated port on the motherboard for SL then upgrade.
