You should update your profile with your Mobo, CPU and GPU information. This helps people help you diagnose possible issues and give useful advice. You can do this by clicking on the Profile link at the top right of the page.

If the combo update is in your downloads folder or desktop is not being recognised then trash it and download again.

There is some hardware (sandybridge) that requires an update helper to be run before you update to 10.6.8

There is some hardware that it is best to use the 10.6.7 combo update.

I have no idea on the best advice to give as I do not know what hardware that you are using.
