I am currently working with a genuine Mac and do not like the way, Apple is heading for with the operating system.

Even if I could install Mavericks or Yosemite I would not do so. I like to stay with 10.8.x for several reasons. I feel the moment coming closer when Apple is making Macs which are not capable of running 10.8 anymore and this is exactly the time when I will ditch the Mac and will build my own.

Whilst listening into the Apple community I can clearly read between the lines that other Mac users will give up their good faith for Apple too and will look for alternatives soon – aka Hackintosh.

The CustoMac Buyers Guide is a great help but does not say anything about backwards compatibility. It would be helpful for a growing group of users to know which hardware is compatible with which OS version.

Thank you very much for your thoughts.

I think this is a growing question, as new chipsets and graphics cards are not backwards compatible with many older OS X versions. This post may help-

The table shows the CPU and motherboard combos that are compatible with each version of OS X back to 10.6 Snow Leopard. Haswell support starts with 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. The older the system, the earlier the supported OS X version.

This site has maintained parts guides and compatibility reports since 2010. In my opinion the best compatible builds for each major OS can be viewed by checking out the above post and comparing to some older buyer's guides. These links may help-
