Newbie: this setup vs. Mid range mac mini

If hassle vs cost/benefit ratio are a concern, maybe pricing out cheaper components for the customac will place the proposition more in favor of hackintosh. I built a 3570k i5 hackintosh with 8gb ram, 120gb SSD no video card for about $500. Here are some thoughts: - Go for 3570k i5 rather than...

    msi z77a-gd55 with i5 3570k?

I am not familiar with your board, but I had fantastic results with the MSI z77ma-g45 board as outlined in kduvernay's post. Modded bios is in forums somewhere, make sure to use version .140. Everything works with non dsdt install, very simple install process. Boot up time is very fast.

    tonymacx86 Build - GA-P55M-UD2 - Core i5-750 - 9400 GT

tonymacx86 Build - GA-P55M-UD2 - Core i5-750 - 8800 GT So I finally made the jump and did a clean install of ML on a new SSD for my Dad's hackintosh, which again is exactly same config as yours. I updated BIOS to F11 (keeping in mind to use the right revision, mine is 1.0) and used the DSDT...

    tonymacx86 Build - GA-P55M-UD2 - Core i5-750 - 9400 GT

tonymacx86 Build - GA-P55M-UD2 - Core i5-750 - 8800 GT Thanks for the help, but your build somehow seemed a lot more complicated than my situation; given I am just using it as a desktop and am doing a clean ML install. Also are all your multibeast settings necessary for me? Based on tonymac...

    tonymacx86 Build - GA-P55M-UD2 - Core i5-750 - 9400 GT

tonymacx86 Build - GA-P55M-UD2 - Core i5-750 - 8800 GT So I built this exact same system back in 2010 for my Dad and have basically told him not to update at all for fear of things not working. He is still on SL. System has started to slow down a bit, partially because he doesn't know how to...

Trying to keep the cost down. Any suggestions?

You might have missed out on ram and Msi mobo deals as those died in last few days. Micro enter deal should still be good. What did you end up getting? For PSU I wound up getting a coolermaster gx450 for $30 AR, but shoulda went for corsair cx430 or 500. Seems better reviewed and cost $35 and...

    Non serious gaming mackintosh/ pc

If you are willing to go microATX then the MSI Z77ma-g45 is still $80 after rebate and microATX cases are cheaper overall. It also has a very simple install process apparently, does not require DSDT. I picked mine up few days ago for $65 after rebate!!! Can't beat that. Also, Not sure if...

Thanks for answering all my n00b questions.

    i3–3225 versus i5–3570K for non-gaming hackintosh

Hmmm, so i3 it is. So i5 is really just for gaming and what else? Video processing? Sounds too much of a price premium if you can't see it's benefits in general usage. Even mildly overclocked there's no difference? In regards to the GA mini ITX boards, I'd love to use them but they are just...

    MSI Z77MA-G45 vs GA-Z77-DS3H

Great, thanks for allaying my fears. Will stay with the MSI board then, was almost going to cancel the amazon order before it shipped. I also favor it over the gigabyte because it is mATX and not ATX. Only mATX gigabyte on customac list is the B75 and that is more expensive than MSI z77!!! The...

    i3–3225 versus i5–3570K for non-gaming hackintosh

I agree with you, certainly the lower end processor is more than enough for the required tasks. However I'd like to know if the extra cost associated with the higher end processor would translate to any noticeable improvement in performance now, as well as provide some extra longevity for the...

Trying to keep the cost down. Any suggestions?

Did you get all your components already? There is a good deal on the MSI Z77 motherboard on Newegg for $65 after rebates(check out kduvernay thread on z77 mobos). If you have a micro center near you, they are selling the 3570k for $189+tax and if you really want to stay with gigabyte mobo you...

    i3–3225 versus i5–3570K for non-gaming hackintosh

I am debating back and forth between these two processors because I am building a hackintosh for someone who won't be doing any heavy 3-D gaming. It will mainly be used for Internet, wordprocessing, photo editing, and movie watching. The difference in price for the system is about $65 (370...

    MSI Z77MA-G45 vs GA-Z77-DS3H

So going forward with either of these motherboards do you predict any issues with future OS X updates? Granted I can get full functionality out of these motherboards currently without creating a custom DSDT and just modified bios for the MSI motherboard, you are saying I should still create a...

    MSI Z77MA-G45 vs GA-Z77-DS3H

Thanks again guys for the information. The last two statements however seem to contradict each other a little in regards to modifying DSDT or not with respect to these 2 boards. I do get that there can be bios issues and having the right bios version/mod is important, but I have also heard about...

    MSI Z77MA-G45 vs GA-Z77-DS3H

Thanks for the recommendations. At $50-$65 I don't believe the B75 motherboards are any cheaper according to new egg prices. Also I don't know how compatible the other B75 motherboards are except for the one recommended by the custoMac tutorial. I am trying to go for minimal DSDT hacking as...

    MSI Z77MA-G45 vs GA-Z77-DS3H

MSI Z77MA-G45 vs GA-Z77-DS3H: Which is Better? Just wondering what are pros-cons of these 2 boards. Asking due to slight price differences. MSI board is $65 after rebates @ amazon/newegg, GA board is $50 + tax bundled with 3570k @ microcenter. Not a big difference, but I am trying to build...

Z77 mATX Motherboards and OS X

Uh yikes, I haven't a clue on how to do that. Does anyone have the modded bios for download or at least a step-by-step tutorial? Just don't know what I would mod even if I learned how to actually do it. Thanks. --- btw is this a working modded bios and do I need to update to 1.5 bios version...

Z77 mATX Motherboards and OS X

Quick n00b question: what do you mean by "modded bios"? Do you just mean an updated bios? Specifically for the MSI board, when you modded it to .140 do you mean version 1.4 as it states on the MSI website? Has anyone updated to 1.5 or should I stick with 1.4?
