Very nice writeup. I'm think of building a similar system, but SuperMicro's dual LGA 1366 motherboards are so cheap that I think I can get away with a plain E-ATX setup.

Honestly, it sounds like a bad disk drive. It's the same error other folks have seen from a dead disk. But basically, OS X thinks your filesystem is hosed.

Boot with '-v' to get verbose output and see where it's hanging in the boot process. Without an error message, it's impossible to say what's going wrong. You can also try '-x' to boot in safe mode.

Do you have VT-D disabled in your bios? Do you still see crashes when booting in safe mode (-x)? You might take a look at this thread.
