Hi all, so I'm thinking about a G5 Mod with a sliding motherboard tray.

The idea is to use a Lian Li PC-60 tray with a pair of 'full extension' drawer runners mounted behind the motherboard tray.

I know Neilhart did something similar to this with one of his mods, and I wondered if he or anyone else had any advice on the type of drawer runners used. (Awesome as always Neilhart! :) )

This is the basic idea:

At the moment I'm wondering whether to go with a 'vanilla' runner or a soft close or push to open variant... Thoughts anyone? :)

miv79 this is a very interesting subject and I thought about it for a long time before starting my system on slides project. The slides that I used are just vanilla 16" (400mm) full extension slides with release latches so that the drawer is removable.

The problems lay in the details of the design. Where to put the drives, where to put the PSU and how to manage the cable harness. The the fans... and it just goes on and on...

However this was one of the most satisfying hacks that I have completed.

You are in the right place to ask questions and research how others have done things.

Good modding,

Thanks Neil,

The release latches are something I didn't think about at all so good one for pointing that out!

I've actually ordered a pair of the soft close runners as I think push to open will likely cause more trouble than its worth. (I'm bound to accidentally release the tray and damage my cabling.... or worse!)

They're not stupidly expensive (about $9) so its not the end of the world if I have to replace them with an alternative.

In terms of placement of the components I think I've mostly got that figured out with the exception of cooling. I currently have a Corsair H100 which I don't think will fit in the case with my currently planned layout. At this point its looking like I'll probably swap that for a smaller unit (H80i or equivalent). This shouldn't impact the performance too much as I think the H100 is probably overkill for 95% of what I do on my system anyway.

I will be doing a build log once I've got everything finalised and ordered though that is likely to be some weeks away yet! :)

I love the idea and am in the planing stage to build a wood case and adding slides would be cool .
Just a thought but water cooling will make it hard to slide it in and out.
Air cooling would be just unplug the fan and slide it out.
Water cooling just isn't going to be as easy to slide in and out, will need to have radiator mounted to the sliding base to work.
From my small experience with water cooling, I don't game and over clocking is just a play time thing to me so water cooling just isn't worth the trouble for me.
Just my $.02:think:
I just went back and looked at your picture and a radiator will work just fine if your back slides out and the radiator is mounted to the back.
As always there is a hundred ways to do anything.
That's whats so much fun with modding, figuring out which way to go with the tools and skills we have.
