So this build started out as a very cheap upgrade to my poor 2013 new Mac Pro which had a bad GPU riser board. I guess it died at the right time, as I've been wanting something a bit more powerful and was looking for something to hack together. I lucked out and found a pre-hacked G4 quicksilver case being sold on eBay, which was featured on the Overclocker.net case mod section. See http://www.overclock.net/t/1349978/case-mod-powerhack-g4-quicksilver for the whole case modification and what was done. I'm not sure why he ended up selling the case, as it's pretty slick as-is, just needs some modifications for my uses. I ended up ripping out the front usb and firewire panel and the mp3 "macintosh chime" player hack literally out of the case. I'd like to put in USB 3 panel and maybe a slimline slot load blu ray, removing the plastic front and putting some soft bristles so you can't see the actual drive.

As for the hardware side of things, I ended up following Freak's x99 mATX build here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-buil...ing-5-matx-build-i7-5930k-gtx-970-clover.html

Might end up going to a Maxwell GPU and a m.2 SSD sooner or later. Prices are looking kinda good for the holidays.

That is a very nice case! It will be interesting to see how the cooling works out. I have found the G5 cases to be very easy to cool because they are so open. The G4s are more confined and tend to hold the heat. Looking forward to your build!
