Wait for Kaby Lake chips or go with Core i7-6700K

Yes, I believe the Kaby Lake CPUs work with Z170 motherboards.

Since Skylake only seems to have lasted a year (introduced a year ago), does that mean that we can expect a new architecture once a year? Or is it just the CPU? If you can rip out your i7-6700K and then install a Kaby CPU without having to buy a new mobo, then it won't be too bad. But if it's a new architecture then that probably means a new mobo.
Intel is calling Kabylake an optimization of Skylake, not a new architecture. Based on the same 14 nm process. You will be able to install them on your z170 mobo with a simple BIOS update.

BUT the question is... Will Cannon Lake be an easy BIOS update?
Or will it involve a whole new mobo?
Who knows.

Cannon Lake will require a new 200-series chipset.

A new 200 series chipset? PCH? Thanks for the idea. I found http://wccftech.com/intel-kaby-lake-200-series-chipset-processor-platform/

Just like the transition from Z87 to Z97, the new 200-series chipset will mostly remain the same but will include increased I/O performance that is very important for the platform to be ready for Intel’s next generation Optane storage products that use Intel’s 3D XPoint memory architecture. So the basic features of the 200-series chipset aside from supporting Kaby Lake-S processors will include up to 24 PCI-e 3.0 lanes (up from 20 on 100-Series Chipset),

Makes me wonder how MS would differentiate between Skylake and Kabylake. I'm not talking about identifying a processor part number, I'm talking about rationalising one CPU not being allowed to run W7 and the other only being able to run W10. This smacks of Apple's excuse for not supporting PPC "because it takes a lot of disk space".

Another crucial feature of the new lineup is that not only will the Kaby Lake processors be compatible with the current 100-series motherboards but Skylake processors, available today, will also be compatible with the 200-series platform. This cross-generation support will be quite useful, not only for new users but also existing user base that may see the need to update to faster processors in the Kaby Lake-S lineup. Intel’s disruptive Optane SSDs and DIMMs will be a major feature set for the 200-series chipset as the faster storage solutions will not only result in responsive PCs but also better system utilization that is otherwise bottlenecked by conventional HDDs and even some older SSDs.

Since not everyone will be able to afford the new Intel NVME disk drives, it makes no sense that MS will pin their OS hopes to those features. Maybe it's the faster RAM? W8 was a flop and W10 is perceived as no better. How then is MS going to sell more PCs? It would have been better to say "Windows 7 will not support Intel NVME disk drives. Period." and be done with it. X99 has 40 lanes, iirc, more than KabyLake or Skylake, so it should be able to handle a measly PCI-E X4 Intel NVME card with ease. And if it can easily handle that NVME board it should also be able to do so when running W7. So it has to be that Intel does not want to support a driver for anything but W10. I think that's fragmenting themselves too much, just like Chrome and ARM have. And if W10 taught us anything it is that the older Intel graphics chipsets not being supported was a major cause of W10 being perceived as being unreliable. Not everyone will be interested in editing 4k video in real time, for instance. That is a very small market compared to the average Joe and Jane that just want to look at YouTube videos, play movies and teleconference with their kids and grandkids.

I've been making my list to build my first Hackintosh and I'm torn about waiting for the Kaby Lake chip. I want native Thunderbolt and USB-C. Is it worth the wait or should I just go with the current fastest chip? How long does it take to test out a chip to see if it's stable to use in a hackintosh? This computer will be used for Pro Tools audio mixing, Adobe Lightroom, and Adobe Premiere.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Did your system work out? My system was working with El Capitan until I screw it up trying to change permission on the root drive. I then tried to load Sierra with no success... Going to try to go back to El Capitan
