Is anyone else getting temps around 90-100ºC? Whenever I use handbrake to convert video I always get high temps.
Usually
core 1:100ºC
core 2:96ºC
core 3:94ºC
core 4:89ºC
heatsink:91ºC

and it holds there (give or take 1ºC) until it's done. I put new thermal compound down but it just keep all the other cores from hitting 100ºC which is what would happen before.

I haven't overclocked or changed the stock settings, and use stock fan but from everything I am reading, the temps kind of concern me. Maybe HWmonitor temps are off? The temps go from high 30s to over 90 in less than 30 sec.

Any direction/advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Buy a good aftermarket cooling solution.

I agree with this but I would try to reseat your cooler again first.
Your temps are quite excessive for a non o/c cpu, factory cooler or not.

I've been running HB all afternoon. I use a SFF Shuttle case with the factory ICE cooler and 1.22v (junk bios) to run all cores at 3.8GHz. My temps are maxing at 65c after many hours (6+) of HB.
Try a cooler reseat before buying another cooling solution. You will definitely need a new cooler for o/c though.

Make sure the Intel stock cooler is properly seated. I've seen so many cases of people just gently pushing in the pins and as a result having incomplete compact between the IHS and the heatsink. Press the pins firmly until they click. Once the cooler is properly installed you should be able to lift the motherboard by holding just the heatsink.

Those are high temperatures, you can get a better idea by looking at the normal operating temperature ranges. You better get either a closed loop water cooling or a bigger heatsink with better fan. Stock heatsink and fan wont cut it. If you don't want to get any of those, resit the heatsink. It seems your heatsink has not been seated properly.

That's good point, the heatsink needs to fit as tightly as possible against the IHS of the CPU.
Often times new PC builders will also use way too much thermal paste which, believe it or
not defeats the whole purpose of applying it. Causes higher temps. All it takes is the thinnest
layer possible that covers all of the CPU's IHS, the metal covering which has the print from
Intel on it with the CPU name, specs and place of manufacture.

What cooler are you using? The stock Intel cooler is total trash....
I played with it for a few min when I first set up my system (Same processor) and ran Prime 95. Temp went over 90 in a few seconds and system shut down.

I actually run a custom water cooler now (T
hermaltake Pacific RL240 Water Cooling Kit) and Prime95 can reach 90 after a few min but the system is stable. My room temp is vey high avg about 85 F however.

Processor running at 44X

I've got the same temp ranges going on. Same CPU. I thought that it was strange that when I'd start a CPU intensive test my temp's would spike REALLY high VERY quickly. At idle I'm around 32 degrees celsius. I have an H100i water cooler and had booted into Windows and set the profile to Quiet. I'm thinking I may need to reseat this cooler and adjust the profile. I used the stock thermal paste that came on it, but I have some AS5 on hand to use.

Hi, I just built my first Hackintosh using an i7 4790k and the stock intel cooler. I saw the exact same results you did the first time I tried to stress test all cores using the "yes" command. At idle, I was only at 24-30c which would seem to indicate that the cooler was working but would quickly climb into the upper 90s quick under load.

After some research online I determined that this issue appears to be common with the 4790k and the intel stock cooler does not appear to be adequate for high CPU utilization tasks. I took the most common advise I found and bought a CoolerMaster 212 EVO for $30 at Microcenter and couldn't be happier.

After I installed the 212 EVO, I ran a stress test again and temps stopped climbing in the high 60s with only one core bouncing between 69 and 70c.

I call that a success.
