So I am new to this site and this kind of stuff, but love to tinker. I have a macbook a1181 mid 2009 that is fully functional. I am wondering if I can use this to parts to make a Mac mini? Am I able to upgrade the USB ports to USB 3.0 by chance? Or even add HDMI? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I have a similar macbook pro; you could use some of the internal components such as hard drive, ram, and possibly cpu if you wanted; the mini display port can be converted to an hdmi signal.

However, the motherboard in these laptops are significantly bigger than a mac mini in itself.

TLDR

You can use some of the components, but I don't see how you could actually convert it. (Unless your imagination is bigger than mine :D.)

A 2009 Apple laptop has the graphics built into the motherboard, the RAM is only compatible with a small handfull of Apple computers from the same period in time. You might be able to use the HDD - but it is already almost 6 years old and only spins at 5400rpm. You cannot add newer technology like HDMI or USB3 to an old laptop. If you want to keep it running then see if you can upgrade your RAM or use an SSD or hybrid drive. I suspect that its days are numbered for being a useful working computer so don't spend much on it.
