Hi there!
I want to show my monitor stand mod. It’s basically a Dell display on an iMac base.
I read a lot of case mod posts in this forum (G4, G5, Mac Mini, Custom cases etc..) but hard to find display mods. I decided to make one because it’s very easy to do at home, no special tools are required. You can buy all the parts and assemble them with a screwdriver.
I switched to this Dell U2414H display because I had sleep issues with BenQ 2320H, my previous display. I had to switch off the display after sleeping the machine, otherwise the computer waked up after 1-2 seconds. Not sure if every BenQ display causing sleep issues but this model certainly triggered my PC to wake up every time. With the Dell monitor I have no random waking, even it’s turned on or in energy saving state.
The plastic stand which came with the Dell is actually not too ugly but I decided to replace it with an Apple one. I think you don't need explanation how beautiful this monitor stand is if you have Apple products…
I grab my monitor stand on Ebay, it’s a Mid 2010 iMac (A1312) part: 922-9365 but any 2009 -2011 iMac stand should be fine with 9 hole mounting.
I screwed the stand and the Lavolta VESA adapter together (screws are not included for this purpose, so bought some in a local store), this piece especially made for mounting iMac to the wall, but works in this mod, too. You can buy the official Apple VESA mount instead of the Lavolta, but be careful: the display will be higher on the stand with the Apple adapter. I haven’t tried the Apple VESA mount so if you guys have success with it, please post your experiences.
The stand is tilted 8 degrees at the connection so I first tried to bend it to horizontal with a vise, but no success. It looks almost impossible to bend this at home.
It’s better not to fully tighten the screws between the stand and the VESA adapter so when you attach the display you can place the monitor to the desired angle (not fully vertical, shifted 1-2 degrees maybe). In this case, you reach the proper angle by bending the screws, then tighten the nuts to preserve the adjustment. It may sound brute force method but works in practice, the display is rock solid in its place for weeks now.
The Lavolta adapter has a 75mm x 75mm VESA mount, so you will have a Vesa 75 to 100 adapter if your display has a VESA 100 mount (as mine). For this purpose I used a VESA plate from a wall mount kit (Multibrackets M Vesa Wallmount) but there are ton of VESA plates like this, just get what’s available at your location.
Finally I placed the Lavolta adapter from the bottom to the top just to raise the height of the display a little bit.
