Great news- developer dokterdok has released Continuity Activation Tool 2.0, which allows pretty much any computer to use Yosemite's Handoff/Continuity features. The latest version works with most Broadcom based Bluetooth 4.0 USB dongles!

Continuity Activation Tool 2.0 released : Adds compatibility with Bluetooth 4.0 USB dongles, allowing many Macs from 2008 and later to easily upgrade to Continuity. See the chart below to verify available upgrade options.

Fantastic tool. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working for my build. I have the IOGear Bluetooth 4.0 USB adapter, and the ASUS PCE-AC68 AC Wireless adapter, under the Mac Pro3,1 definition. IDK if I need to change the system definition in order for it to work, but the tool just says it cant detect the bluetooth device.

I attached images of System Profiler as well as the compatibility check from the tool.

It doesn't work with my TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 + GYMLE B4 Dongle? I don't get it why doesn't detect my GYMLE?

GYMLE Chipset: 20702A3

TP-Link is Atheros based and it clearly states that having an Atheros wifi card in the system will break continuity no matter what.

I wonder then why exactly this card is still in the recommended builds part list???

Because it works in providing you internet. This tool was just released, and before that Continuity was out of the question without official Apple parts. And no matter what Continuity won't work OOB even with Broadcom only chips. So your options are buy a new wireless card that has a broadcom chip, or get an official Apple Airport.
