Hi everybody!

I've been lurking around this site for a couple of years, but haven't decided to try a customac yet. Now may be the time… I consider my computer skills average plus, but I'm very interested and I would have fun building and tinkering.

If I tell you what I need and don't need in a studio computer, will you help me decide if it's worth it?

1. It NEEDS to work with Logic 9, Ableton Live and/or PT.

2. I record a lot of audio and use some heavy sample banks (LASS etc.)

3. I need something that works, after it's set up. I'm thinking that should be possible since I rarely update anyhow. I will NEVER upgrade to Logic X for instance.

4. The computer will not be online.

5. I don't care about graphics.

6. I don't need the latest OS updates or app updates. When something in my studio works, I leave it with that. Right now I'm using 10.8.5 and logic 9, have no reason to update.

7. As of today I don't use TB, but I'm guessing that would be a plus..?

8. I'm using FW-interface.

9. Am using Euphonix/Avid controllers (ethernet)

Would these parts do the job?

Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H
Intel Core i5-4690K
Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Sport 16GB
(8GBx2, Sport,1600MHz, 1.5V, CL9-9-9-24)
Samsung EVO 850 SSD (OSX, Apps)
External HDDs (projects, samples)
Cooler Master B500 V2
BitFenix Prodigy M

I'm thinking about using the internal GPU. Most of the time I won't even look at the screen…

Hi,

check your firewire side of things, does the motherboard provide FW port?

if not check for the most reliable FW PCIe card here in the forums and the "how-to" to have it running rock solid, then I'd say GO FOR IT!

I just built my new audio station, and I ditched my old FW soundcard to avoid this more complexity, and bought me a PCIe audio interface to be sure everything will be the most efficient :D (and got 24 in / 24 out for almost the price of a 6/8 FW audio interface...)

But you can see here lots of users happy with FW devices in their customacs!

Be sure You got every driver for your gear and every software up to date and compatible for the OS you'll install, and that you got the install file for this OS for use of multibeast, but I guess you know how you'll set the build up.

Cheers & good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

Do you have a list of the parts you used in your build? :)

I will check out the possibility in moving away from the FW-interfaces. What do you use?

Have anybody used Lynx Aurora with a hack?

Hi

Using a MOTU PCIe 424 card with a 24i/o interface that I just bought, so my beloved FW MOTU ultralite mk2 finally gets some vacation now after more than 7 years of duty ^^

here is my build :

I'm currently installing all my software and all my hardware drivers, I'm glad WIFI's working so as to be able to download and update every Native Instruments stuff that I own.

So far everything runs smooth (and speed!!), everything rock solid as in a dream :D

I got me a second hand 24i/o + 424PCIe card for 550€, nothing in the external sound cards list can beat this apart from high pricey apogee or motu thunderbolt new devices I guess..

Cheers

Yes.. been running the lynx with a hack for the past year or so.. PT Native...

I just build another hack last week for myself, project studio.. Running Yosemite with PT 11 at the moment with focusrite USB and presonus FW interfaces..

rock solid..

Thanks for the reply, Brad!

Sounds to me like there's no reason to not do this! :)

Hi Brado32,
Are you using the Lynx LT-TB Thunderbolt card in your Aurora?
My Hackingtosh was tested with the UAD Apollo Thunderbolt. Fully compatible.
It does not work with the Antelope Orion32 Thunderbolt (USB works fine, I own one).
I also have a Lynx Aurora 16 and I was debating if I should spend the $600 on a Thunderbolt card.
The TB PCIe card in the computer is an Asus Thunderbolt EX2.
I know that not every thunderbolt AD/DA converter is compatible with Hackingtosh. Probably mostly a driver issue from the manufacturers. That's why I'd like to know more. Very little is known about this topic.
Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!!!
