Hi all

As my adventures in Mountain Lion continue I wondered if anyone could advise me on installing XP Pro 64 Bit on the same drive as Mountain Lion?

I still do have use for it for a couple of things that don't run well on Windows 7 or 8.

So far I have Mountain Lion set up very happy on my 128GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD, and have managed to get Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit) sharing it happily, booting through Chimera.

But I just can't find a way to get XP on there.

So far I've tried creating a FAT partition for it in Disk Utility (like I did with Windows 7) but the XP installer doesn't see the disk at all.
I even tried using a third party partition boot disk to format the partition to NTFS but still the XP installer didn't see it.

In the end I thought I'd try installing to another drive to see if I could then clone the install over.
I had an old IDE ATA drive lying around so I plugged that in (while unplugging the SSD) and installed fine to that.
However my third party boot disk wasn't able to copy it over to the SSD but I eventually read something about gparted so booted up a version of that and copied it across fine.
Then I disconnected the IDE drive and tried booting the SSD but the only thing I could get into was ML and then only using the Unibeast USB.

Updated Chimera, meaning I could boot freely into OSX again but now both my Windows installs wouldn't boot - don't know why Win 7 went south too but it did.

Anyway, I've managed to reinstall Windows 7 and it's playing nice with ML, but I really wanted the XP 64 option on the same drive.

Does anyone have any ideas if it is possible?

I could just leave it on the IDE drive but that kind of defies the point of having a fast SSD system drive.
Okay, maybe a second SSD, but I need to pay my electric bill urgently or all of this becomes pretty academic, so not an option right now.

Any ideas people?

Many thanks!

lookup rehabmans guide. he's done some fine work in this area http://racerrehabman.wordpress.com

The problem with WinXP is that you can't install it on a hybrid GPT/MBR. It will install MBR only and it wants to be on the first partition.

See http://www.tonymacx86.com/snow-leop...multibooting-novice-updated-3-12-see-log.html and scroll down to the section on XP for more info.

Your best bet is a small HDD with WinXP on it and when you need to use it, use the BIOS function key to select it to boot, and otherwise ignore it. Or get a hotswap tray - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817990016 and only put the drive in when you want to boot it.

Thanks GB - wow! hat a hassle just for xp!

Thanks appleiscool - I had read rehabmans guide but got slightly dauned by the complexity of it.
Plus it seems that xp won't even work from a hybrid mbr even if I could manage it?
please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers!

Sounds likke virtual machines may be good for you. Virtual Box is free and would probably serve your purposes.

sorry i dont know about xp, if you have any spare old hdd you can just give it a try.

currently testing a fresh build on one hdd - w7 w8 osx 1082 1083 and linux and if you follow rm's guide its does remind you how to fix the little annoying things like w7 and w8 wont play nice on the same hdd. overall it helps save time googling.

i reformatted rm's guide to make it easier to highlight bits to be aware of, and plan my setup/install. used it twice for two fresh installs, and it does save time.

Thanks for all the tips
Have just tried concentrating to get my ML/Win7/Win8 setup running nice and so far so good - many thanks to rm's blog!

For the xp I will try and find the cash for a second smaller ssd (my birthday Monday so we'll see....) and see how that goes with cloning from the old ata drive - although it will still have to be bios selection for booting between ssd's - anyone know if that will be fine if I leave them all connected?
Manually connecting and disconnecting just to change os seems like a real chore :(

The only other thing I came across researching into this was another bootloader called Clover - not sure if it will do what I want and don't want to undo everything I've done with multi beast - anyone have any ideas on this?

Cheers all!
