Hi all!

After successfully installing ML on my Asus Sabertooth x79 I tried overclocking this beast.

I ran into some issues though. From what I read the easiest way to overclock was to set the multiplier to 47 (48 give kp) but the Turbo doesn't seem to work because it didn't do anything. I could only raise the bar with BLCK set to 132 (133 KP) which gives me 4.2Ghz. Kinda frustrating when you're reading people achieving 4.7Ghz. I have the Corsair H100i cooler so no problem for heat.

With these settings (BLCK 132) I get the following scores:

I'm running a Zotac GTX 680 4GB and 32GB Ram by the way.

Any way I can overclock more efficient or is this good enough?

Thank you!
Best
Dave

Edit: I'm getting 108 Degrees Fahrenheit (42 Celsius) on my system. Is that normal or did I install something wrong?

Just started using the system and I get something weird every now and then. ALL programms suddenly close and immediatly open again ( I see the CPU just went very hot like 52Degrees Celsius and had some kind of thing). Is that because of the overclock? What should I do?

So after A LOT of research I found out what to look at while overclocking.

Sadly the only way I could get a stable system (Surviving Intel Burn and Prime95) was by setting the multiplier to 42 (4.2GHZ) and leaving all the other attributes to AUTO.

Anyone have better idea for a mild overclock? Getting a 19724 Geekbench score now.

Hi there, I'm running the same CPU on a similar motherboard (the P9X79 Pro, also ASUS brand) and I can't seem to get my CPU multiplier to be recognised in OS X. In Windows, my multiplier changes to reflect my BIOS settings, but in OS X it always runs at stock 3.2GHz no matter what I try in BIOS. Would you mind posting your EXACT settings from the AI Tweaker page so that I can try and compare to see what I'm missing?

Thanks! :)

mckinsey123, you need to install HWMonitor to see exactly how fast your computer is running. The "About this Mac" does not reflect the current state of your settings, it never updates itself. You can change it later if you wish, but HWMonitor is the only application that shows exactly how fast your CPU is running.

Hi guys,

Know this is an old thread but hoping there might be some new wisdom to share for overclocking the 3930k with an x79 sabertooth mobo. Cooled with an h100i.

I've currently got it running relatively stable at a multiplier of 46 (4.6ghz). Voltage is at 3.8 or so. sometimes goes up to 4. Is this a problem in the long term?

I might try pushing to 4.7 but pretty happy at 4.6.

I've been using this guide to get this overclock via the BIOS:

http://archive.benchmarkreviews.com...sk=view&id=834&Itemid=38&limit=1&limitstart=3

Main issue/stress test I am having problems with is in After Effects CS6. When doing RAM previews I often get crashes. Just a spinning wheel followed by a crash of just AE, not the whole system. This does not happen when I'm not overclocked.

I do have 64GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM installed using all the slots. Excessive but I use it in AE.
Believe this can cause problems when overclocking but not sure what exactly. I have not attempted to overclock the RAM and am running it at its normal 1600.

Any help on this much appreciated!

Here are my temps according to HW monitor. Again, About this mac thinks I am running at 3.8 for some reason.Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 11.09.26.png

I would say that a voltage of 3.8-4v is seriously overdoing it and will cause long term damage to your CPU. The Max acceptable/recommended voltages for these processors is around 3.5 according to Intel, so you are going way above the safe level. Also it's worth remembering that in OS X, overclocking past 4.2ghz is a law of diminishing returns: you may get higher benchmark scores but real time performance won't progress as much as you'll be increasing voltage. I had my system at a stable 4.2ghz for the last few months but decided to drop it down to the stock 3.2 to save power, and despite my benchmarks dropping I have noticed no perceivable slowdown in my real use, including heavy rendering in Premiere. The bottom line is that, because you can't use Turbo or SpeedStep, by overclocking to 4.6ghz or higher you are pushing your CPU to it's absolute maximum 24/7 - it's like driving your car at 100mph all day long round a circuit - it's not necessary and all you achieve is a fried processor in the long run. I would seriously advise dropping to 4.2ghz or lower and trying a voltage around 2.8v - your CPU is simply more important than your (somewhat pointless) benchmark scores. Hope that helps.
